Do you have any tips for finding Native American ancestors of white families in the South East?If mixed families didn't successfully hide their native heritage during the 1800's, they would have faced discrimination and hardship.
Even in the 1920's Census takers were ordered to change Indian to Mulatto or Colored on the census forms.
That surely must make it harder to fill in a family tree now?

thank you for your question and yes you are right it is difficult to research due to the changes the cesus takers made. I will be detailing this process in one of my next articles. I will post here when it is done you so can get the information.
It's just too long of an answer to post here plus I want as many people as possible to be able to see the question.
Thank you very much for your question. And I'll see you with the answer soon!

I answered this post a few days ago however I just noticed the answer did not post. Sorry about that.
I really appreciate your question as I am doing a series of articles on this subject. As soon as the article with the answer to your question is up I will post the URL here so you can obtain your answer.
There is just too much information to answer it in a post. So keep your eye out for the article in about a week's time.

Good day! I am of Maliseet descent. My mother came from Fredericton, New Brunswick and my father came from Houlton, Maine. I am not able to find anything on either parent. My grandfather was naturalized, enlisted in the army, and returned a WWI veteran. On his enlistment papers his race was listed "white". I cannot find anything on my grandparents. They, too, came from Canada. In order for me to register my children as native americans, I have to prove my father's native ancestry. Where do I start? My grandparents were from Kingsclear, NB. Both died in Maine though. I cannot find anything other than their marriage certificate and some military papers. They were buried in Houlton, Maine, but there are no other records of them. Help!-- posted by tomahgirl
» re1963 - Looking for my Heritage
My gr gr grandfather was reportedly 1/2 native american. Problem is when looking up this side of my family, I cannot find any one past him. His name was John Will Trammell born in Tenn. in 1862. His father's name was Dennis Trammell who supposedly married a Cherokee woman. Can you help me find some kind of record for this?-- posted by re1963
