I liked your sense of humor.

Merry Mithramas to you, too! smile

I can imagine those ancient Persians who were so interested in the stars and their movements. When they developed some skills and understandings of shadows and the movement of the sun they realized that the sun was moving further and further away. One day it's arc would be so small that it would only be in the sky for a moment and--then--Poof!! It would be gone for ever and they would be left in total darkness.

I'll just wager they started praying to the sun god, Mitrha, pleading for him to return his favors to them. And, wonder of wonders, on December 21st it reached its lowest point and came up and set in the same arc on the 22nd, 23rd and the 24th which is called the Winter Solstice. That's when the Sun stands still for 3 days--very interesting thing the idea of 3 days. On the 25th it begins to rise higher in the sky. No wonder they worshipped it with their limited understanding of the solar system. The Egyptians called their god of the Sun, Rah, I think.

I learned, in college, that when Christianity began to take hold in government many pagan beliefs were incorporated among them what the ideas of the Sun gods as the people had been so prepared. So, Jesus' birthday had to be set for the day the Sun begins its journey back toward Earth.

And, the pink gorilla says,

"A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year."
