» georgebaain - Deconstructing Mythology Anyone read the new book "When They Severed Earth From Sky - How the Human mind Shapes Myth", by E. and P. Barber; Princeton 2005? The authors, one a linguistics and archaeology professor, the other with a museum, has the words "human mind" inthe title but there are no references to even recent published works related to the brain; nor does the index refer to Evolutionary Psychology or to recent works about language. It seems to me that the book says - we all knew that anyway - that various major eruptions of volcanos, tsunamis, and changes in sea levels caused ancient people to construct (this is before writinglegendsds, songs, etc to memorialize the event and warn of possible future events. I was disappointed that there was no link to findings that the brain of humans is like a neural net that, in addition to being able to do recursive thinking and to have memory, can make inferences about the present and the future. Out of such a brain may come myth. -- posted by georgebaain
