You will have to get a copy of the Spring issue of the Kodály Envoy (possibly from one of the Texas Kodály specialists...contact Kathy Kuddes in Plano, TX or others). By the way, the Envoy is the official journal of the Organization of American Kodály Educators and is published quarterly. I suggest that you look up "Ruth Crawford Seeger" or "Peggy Seeger" on one of the internet search engines to get a review of Judith Tick's biography of Seeger. Good luck. -- posted by DonaldG » MagdalenaF - Magdalena Fitzsimmons Dear David Saphra, I noticed your me Magdalena FitzsimmonsDear David Saphra, I noticed your message about the game "Bobby Are You Ready" at this site. I worked with Jerry Kerlin for several years at Third Street Music School in NYC and was the person who passed that game along to him! Where did I get it? Well, I heard a program on NPR a number of years ago about children's singing games and wrote the melody down as I heard it. The original title was "Wolf, Are You Ready", but I changed "wolf" to the names of various students in my music class. I presented the game in a class that Jerry and I were teaching together, and generically dubbed it "Bobby Are You Ready". -- posted by MagdalenaF » Deborah_Jeter - Magdalena, that is so cool! Thanks for sharing with us about the Magdalena, that is so cool! Thanks for sharing with us about the origin of how this particular singing game came to be known as Bobby, are you ready? I love this discussion! I hope some more music educators will share their favorite singing games here so we can all benefit. Plus any history on any of these games, such as what Magdalena shared, would be an added cherry on top!Deborah Jeter -- posted by Deborah_Jeter » DavidS_9 - Dear Magdalena, That's pretty neat about your having originat Dear Magdalena,That's pretty neat about your having originated the BOBBY ARE YOU READY game. It provides for a nice little argument in favor of teacher generated material versus the purist (zen?) notion of just being a non-obtrusive cypher, capturing what already exists in "nature." I'm hitting a pretty nice little groove with the game. I've been using it to reinforce steady beat and the ability to come in confidently after four beats of rest. The patting they do on their thighs is the ticking of the clock, and helps the chaser try to keep singing ideas rhythmically. I usually precede the activity with the song "Brush Your Teeth," the last verse of which gives the students a chance to hear all sorts of possibilites for morning routine activities: Well, you wake up in the morning I'm going to try and take Jerry's Kerlin's N.Y.U. course one of these summer's. I positively LOVED the 3rd Street Settlement House program, which I attended about ten years ago. I believe it's no longer in existence. If you've got any other great games like BOBBY ARE YOU READY, I hope you can be convinced to part with a few. Yours truly, -- posted by DavidS_9 » Deborah_Jeter - Now I know why you weren't able to find the song, Kay! I'm so sorry for the misinformation but the publisher for the Bucket of Water partner game that I was speaking of, some months back is not MacMillan but rather Silver Burdett. Geesh! I don't know what I was thinking when I said MacMillan except maybe it was the version that I reviewed when the district was looking for a new adoption. MacMillan just stuck in my mind for some reason. However, if anyone checks back, the version of the Bucket of Water that I was speaking of is in the third grade level of Silver Burdett.-- posted by Deborah_Jeter » Deborah_Jeter - Re: Re: A reminder to all you folklorists...this year is the 50t In response to message posted by ecsmmm:Couldn't possibly tell you that, Donald. I have a copy of it too and my guess would be that it's not all that uncommon. If that is the case, then it's probably not worth that much in dollars but it's still a treasure to have for the classroom. Thanks for dropping by. Let me know if you find out something about the worth of the book. -- posted by Deborah_Jeter « Previous 1 2 3 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
