During my mis-spent youth, I used to ride all the way from the intersection of the LIE and Clearview Expressway via the "Old Motor Parkway" to Alley pond , then across to the other
side of the Cross island parkway, through what
is now the Alley pond conservation center, and
along the Bay to the Throggs neck bridge.
Is this route still accessible? Legal to Ride?
It used to be a lot of fun, even though much of it is paved, but that was about 25 years ago. Even then , it was wise to go in groups.

Hi oconnellod

I can't tell you if all that you speak of is still accessible. As for it being legal to ride. New York City Department of Parks built the greenways for bicycling, jogging, and walking, except for where signs are posted prohibiting such actives. What could be in question is whether or not Mountain Biking is permitted on the off road trails with in the park, it could be viewed either way because no signs are posted stating that you can or can not, nor has any fines been given. Perhaps in the near future we will have a more definite answer as to the position of the Parks Department. A Mountain Bike Club has asked if it can build trails in Van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx. I’ll write about the out come.

Mountain Biking on the unpaved trails in Alley Pond Park is Strictly Prohibited. There is a paved trail the runs through the forest. All off-road biking is prohibited and clearly marked with signs. The NRG keeps posting signs and mountain bikers keep tearing them down. some signs are still posted. These mountain bikers are causing major erosion to the trail and damaging foliage and causing major mud holes and serious hazards along the trail for those that like to walk them and enjoy the beauty of the park. True, the trails are fun, but not at the expense of destroying what little wildlife area we have left to enjoy. They have no respect for the trails and do not realize they are breaking the law. They are subject to substantial fine or confiscation of their vehicles. Major efforts are going to be taken in Alley Pond to enforce these regulations more stringently, going forward. If these rogue riders want to lose their expensive toys let them continue to disrespect nature.

As a boy who grew up in Bayside, NY. I can tell you that Alley Pond park is a great place. i have memories as a child and then into my teens. I've taken the bicycle routes the walk routes the animal routes, everything. I love the park and think we should be able to use it. I've been so far deep in that park i once spent the night because i got lost and i was scared, i was only 12. Everyone who lives in that area knows that alley pond is "the place." because it is.

In response to message posted by oconnellod:

New York City Parks Dept. Has hundreds of acres of trails which are
un-maintained, un-planned and un-kept, Yet they refuse to allow MB's
use them legally.

I have recently met with Tim Blumenthal the President of IMBA and
toured many trails on NYC parks property. Tim has agreed to allow the
Subaru Trail teams to come out and help with design and construction
of a trail system. Now we need to get the city parks commisioner to
allow MB's in legally. The propsed trail would be approx. 16miles of
mostly single track. (you are reading this correctly)(yes in New York
City)

This is where you can help we need to organize a group to fight for
this. Please goto the link below and sign on, you will get info on
letters to write rides to take and trails to build and rides to take
place right here in NYC. Please take a minute to sign up and lets get
some good training spaces right here in our own back yards.
