» Terrie_Bittner - I'm doing an independent study course on American women prior t I'm doing an independent study course on American women prior to 1860. I'd like to find a good book on the lives of early LDS women, especially one that focuses on the lives of the women. (I'm LDS, so obviously that will affect what I want to read.) Any ideas anyone? Thanks.-- posted by Terrie_Bittner » Jennifer_Johnson - There is one called Nauvoo women or something like that. There is one called Nauvoo women or something like that. Or the ones that focus on specific women like Lucy Mack Smith. I will think about it some more.-- posted by Jennifer_Johnson » talleyrlc - History of Women I believe the concept of polygamy has been greatly misunderstood. The Lord instituted polygamy for very specific reasons, and it was not at all for the sexual exploitation of women. Women have been and continue to be honored by the Lord and His Church. I am not quite clear why reading the History of the Church would lead anyone to believe that women were mistreated.Rebecca Talley -- posted by talleyrlc » juder - mormon women pre-1860 I remember a 14 or 15 year old girl in History of the Church being told she was chosen to be one of the Prophet Joseph wives and her replying "Why Daddy?" to her father. But I can't remember he name exactly. I just think this shows the place of women in the early Church. i.e., a lack of choice in choosing a husband.-- posted by juder » Beehive - mormon pioneer women Rebecca,Try this book......Remarkable Stories from the Lives of Latter-day Saint Women. Vol. 2. Compiled by Leon R. Hartshorn, published by Deseret Book. It gives some 'journal entry' type history of the women who helped start the church. I would suggest this book to anyone wanting to know more about the early Mormon pioneer women. They are not famous in a worldly sense but if we could take the effort to find out more about them, their sacrifices, trials and victories it would benefit us as mothers and Christians. Also, if more people would take time to actually learn the facts surrounding this period of history instead of the rumors and grotesque gossip re: polygamy, mistreatment of women etc would be dealt with in a more realistic, educated manner. My ancestors were among the first pioneers to follow Brigham into the West, they were honored and respected women. They were appreciated for their efforts, hard work and sacrifice. Their journals reflect love, honor and respect for eachother as women. The only ones who have a problem with how they were 'treated' are those who have not been able to find out the true, credible facts about this period in history. History is not the gossip of today, it is the written, factual word of yesterday. Unfortunately it is easier and more sensational to believe the gossip rather than to take the time to be educated, read credible accounts and find out for ones self the true facts. There are many great books on this subject. Hope this helps with your research. Good luck to you, Michele Hatton -- posted by Beehive
