» Sunbear - Understanding poetry

Hi Linda,

Have read this material by you before. I do think you do an excellent job in your course--one of the best looks at poetry that I have come across.

Hope you had a happy holiday season. Looking forward to continuing to read your enlightening articles (as enlightening as an essay can be (to paraphrase some words your used onece).

I have read some of your online poetry also. I especially liked the one about envy. Hope to read some more of your work.

Best wishes,
Tom

Hi Tom,
Glad you found this essay useful. Happy New Year! All the best in the new year. Here's a poem expressing that wish:

New Year for the Poet

I pray that your poems
Bring you closer to your faith,
That they sing new songs
Equal to your voice.

I wish you mornings
With the sun slanting across your page
At an angle that lights
The dark corners of your thoughts.

I pray that breaking bread
At your table
You look across at smiles
That warm the ink in your veins.

I wish you the kind of evening
That saints pass
Dissolving in calmness,
Communing with the Divine Poet.

I pray that night locks out busy worries
And secures you in dreamless peace
And Heavenly Father rocks you
In the cradle of Divine Mother's love.

Hi Linda,

What wonderful, moving poem! I found myself speechless after reading it. From the standpoint of middle age, I find it especially poignant with its spiritual emphasis.

I love the way the poem bridges the worlds of art and spirituality. In the end separation is an illusion; eventually we find the Divine peeking out from all the corners of our lives, not just the sunbeams.

"All things that rise must converge" (cannot remember the citation). (Believe I read that in a Flannery O'Connor novel--will try to find the author later.

Thank you so much for sharing that wonderful poem with me; it deserves a wider audience also.

Best wishes,
Tom
