I'm a veterinary nurse, and after yrs of experience, i've learned a few things about breed identification. First of all, if you adopt from a humane shelter, they can be very misleading. Alot of these shelters are underfunded, and understaffed, or staffed with people who are doing court ordered community service who have no animal experience at all. At the vet i worked at, people would bring in puppies all of the time that just said terrier mix. Basically, they just make up whatever they think at the shelter because you have to have something to put on the form for breed. Most small dogs get called terrier mixes. Unless you actually knew the parents and grandparents, it's impossible to know the breed. People are also deceived by the status symbol of any dog being AKC registered. It's no magnificent feat to get a dog AKC registered. I knew many people who found dogs on the streets, and just requested a certification from the AKC, they filled out the forms, and then had an "AKC" registered dog to start making money with. As long as it looks enough like what the AKC standard is supposed to be, you can get it registered. As for adopted animals, you can only look at the dogs physical traits and qualities and personality and guess what type of dog it is. I've seen the shelter send people home with dogs they called Rottweilers, that grew up to be 25 lb dogs that more resembled a beagle, and vice versa. My vet is a participating vet with our local HS so i saw these dogs every day(now stay at home mom). I was the first person to see a pup that had just been adopted at the shelter, as they came in for their free checkup so that the person could return them if there were any major problems. Unless you see the dogs mate, it is all just speculation, and your dog is just whatever it looks the most like. If you think it looks like a pit bull terrier, than it's a terrier. But i should warn you, alot of homeowner's insurances won't insure you if you own a pit, so i'd go with lab mix, or beagle mix, or whatever it looks more like. The less pure bred a dog is, the healthier it is going to be. People put all of this value on "pure bred" dogs, when you are breeding for desired physical traits, you also in up in-breeding many undesireable recessive traits that can cause a dog numerous health problems. In nature, natural selection helps to weed out undesireable traits, and only the healthier ones survive. This is why with human intervention and much in-breeding, we end up with dogs that need alot of veterinary attention. Think about it, if we let all the dogs in the world go free, there would be no teacup poodles, in just over a decade, as they wouldn't survive, they'd be eaten by snakes. I have a Labrador retriever that was a gift, I love her alot and she does have AKC papers, but she also requires thyroid medicine twice daily and she has terrible hip dysplasia that makes her miserable when you play fetch with her, but she's more miserable if you don't. She's neurotic as most labs are, in pain, has food allergies, etc, but she's a great companion and i know she'd never hurt my 2yr old and 9 month old sons, so i love that she is a lab. But when humans interfere with nature by controlling genetics, you get recessive traits that can make the animal miserable. Be glad that your dog is a mix and just be happy with that. The more mixed the better. It would be more fun if everyone just adopted pups from the shelter, and just waited a yr to see what the dog was going to turn out to be. Because i have small kids, i probably will try to get another retriever and be a hypocrite here, but i'm not going to let some backyard breeder make $500 bucks off of it, i'll go to a shelter and adopt a needy puppy that will appreciate being rescued.-- posted by psychotrish » Marysauntie - please help identify my puppy's breed We know she is Lab mixed with ??. Bear is all black with the exception of his blaze and two front paws. anybody with any knowledge of either breeds please give me some feed back my g/f's email is crazyb3autifu11@aol.com-- posted by BGIZZLE » mjglp_62 - Help! Your dog looks a lot like my dog I adopted when she was 2 1/2 years old. Her tail has been bobbed, she stands about 11 inches at the shoulder and weighs 14 pounds. Her color is the same as Coco. I have no idea what she is, some say Poodle mix others say there is no Poodle in her. She sheds and her coat is fine like cotton. I really wish I knew what she is but I couldn't love her anymore if I did know. She appeared to have been badly traumatized when I got her, frightened of the slightest sound or objects in anyone's hand. She has come a long way in the past four years. She and my cat are real buds. -- posted by mjglp_62 » mjglp_62 - What breeds are in my dog? lol In response to What breeds are in my dog? lol posted by LeAnnelovesRick:Your dog looks like a Boxer to me. -- posted by mjglp_62 » sandia7367 - Not sure what breed my dog is We adopted Harley a year ago when she was jus 10 weeks old. Her papers say she is a black lab/shepard mix. I can see some lab in her as her ears are rounded but shorter than the labs ears, but see not shepard in her. Some people have said she looks like she could have some Pit Bull in her because of her face. She is about 45 lbs now, is not agressive, loves to play, is all black with the exception of a thin white stripe on her chest and a bit of white on one of her back paws. Any thoughts? I have pictures of her, I'm just not sure how to add the photo.
