Gamaliel mentions two by name who claimed to be the Messiah. See this list of others who also made the same claim (or their followers claimed such about them). Even in Christianity... David Koresh, Sun Myung Moon, Ann Lee, David Icke... (heck, even Charles Manson claimed to be Jesus). And even some outside Judaism and Christianity claimed to be the Messiah...

We probably shouldn't make too much more of Gamaliel. Josephus, the Jewish historian also mentions the two martyrs here, although the dates are in dispute. Gamaliel's cool logic appeals to some readers, especially those men haters who search for reasons for their perverted doctrine. The legalist doesn't see Jesus. Like the Jews who would follow in his footsteps, Gamaliel discounts that prophecy could be occuring in his own time and place. Another Pharisee will come along in a few chapters and his words will move nations and people to change. Gamaliel will soon be forgotten. Those who seek a cool logical religion run the risk of losing their lives, their children, and their own heart.

Such cool folk will choose the testimony of Gamaliel everytime over the testimony of Paul.

It was his goons who beat up the apostles either by direct order or indirectly. Was it not? Wasn't that a way of testing truth in those days--like burning someone at the stake--if they're a child of God the fire doesn't touch them. Otherwise, they die in the fire?

So, are we to believe that because the apostles made it through the beatings and continued preaching in the temple that they were telling the truth? Is that the message here?

Times haven't changed all that much, Pinky. I would venture to say that Gamaliel and his friends spent very little time searching the scriptures for messianic prophesy. These fishermen had been with Jesus and they believed His life and teachings. That is why they were selected for punishment. If we spent more time in the scriptures and less time on the Net, we would be more recognizable as children of God.

Wouldn't we?

Since you make your question so direct, I don't believe that is true.

Instead, look at the Pharisees. Who spent more time in the Scriptures than they? Who spends more time in the Scriptures today than the Judaic Orhtodoxy, the Mullahs and fanatical Christians? Does that entitle them to be "more recognizable as children of God"? No...

And Pinky with his colorful spin, "goons" taking orders from Gamaliel.

How you two come up with such illogical conclusions from the brief description written in the Bible is beyond me.

Feels like I'm wading through wastewater before the treatment plant is finished with it.

That's great, Plox. We all do, I'm sure.

But your comments were to the point that what Brother Jones and I had posted were like sewage in process at some disposal plant. In this sense your statements are very insulting. I suppose you think you have made a point of what you think about the quality of the discussion we are having. And, it obviously doesn't meet with your approval, does it?

So, is it your purpose to make either praising or insulting statements about participants as they discuss certain subjects? Is it our lack of intelligence you want to point up or is it just our foolish ideas?

I'm not Wendell, Plox. It was a mistake for us to have boycotted his posts and I'm sorry for the part I played in that effort.
