Any re-creation people?

» JennieAnne - Looking for help I'm hoping that I may be in the right place. I've just been reading Shira's article about ME costuming for SCA and re-enactment and I found it very interesting. I'm trying to put together a period outfit myself for SCA or dancing, but I'm running into a touch of a problem. I was previously researching Turkish costuming, however I've been trying to make the switch to Indian costuming and just am not finding much of anything! I'm hoping maybe someone here might have something they can pass on to me to help me out. Does anyone have any information or links to information on pre 1600 Indian costuming and clothing? I don't have a preference of what time period... I'd really appreciate any help anyone might have.-- posted by JennieAnne » ajaraks - Re: Looking for help In response to message posted by JennieAnne:Many members of my family in law have been involved in the SCA for a long time, and I've been dancing with my grandmother since I was two through american style belly dance. The biggest challenge to authentic middle-eastern and far eastern period costuming is the fact that many of the cultures did not keep any sort of written record depicting the human forms. Most dancing was passed on directly from master to student. Another hurdle is the fact that so many regional folk dances were outlawed when the peoples were conquered. Many of the original dances, meanings and costuming meanings were lost this way. The best information I've ever got was through Morocco and the Casbah Dance Company out of New York. I'd recommend her site. She's spent many years researching all kinds of middle east and far eastern dances and cultures, and might have some information for you. I really didn't mean to give a big lecture about this, I've also been floundering about looking for information to help my relatives with their costumes. I wish you luck in this avenue. -- posted by ajaraks » ghaziya - Re: Looking for help In response to message posted by JennieAnne:You might consider the following: 1. Buy a copy of Dawn Devine Brown's book, From Turban to Toe Ring. It has some information about Indian jewelry, and in the back it lists A LOT of reference books to help you start your research. See a review of it on my web site at http://www.shira.net/reviews.htm 2. Remember, the sari teamed with a choli has been standard attire for women in India since the 6th century AD. You can buy a sari & choli pattern from Folkwear patterns at http://www.folkwear.com . It comes with instructions on how to wrap the sari. 3. Don't limit your research to the web. Go to the library. -- posted by ghaziya
