Syria and Lebanon: News and Analysis
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 Next » » Lawhawk - Bush to Syria: Complete Withdrawal... Or Else... http://www.nypost.com/postopinion/editor... - Syria would be wise to listen, as nothing less than a complete withdrawal will be sufficient these days as the world appears to be behind the US efforts to liberate Lebanon without firing a shot.-- posted by Lawhawk » Lawhawk - Hizbullah brings out its marchers http://www.bloggledygook.com/bloggledygo... - Hizbullah, the same terrorist group that killed 240 Marines as they slept in 1983 while on a peacekeeping mission in Beirut, is holding counterdemonstrations against the pro democracy rallies that have swept through Lebanon over the last three weeks.Hizbullah wants no outside interference (if you believe their slogans), but that obviously doesn't include the Syrians who are outsiders who invaded nearly 30 years ago and haven't left. They also continue their anti-US and anti-Israel sloganeering. The large gathering puts this test of wills to a new level - since we know that Hizbullah is more than willing to use violence to further its goals. What are the pro-democracy rally attendees willing to do for freedom and stamping out terrorism? -- posted by Lawhawk » Lawhawk - Just who is in control of Syria? ASSAD: "IT'S NOT ME" [Rich Lowry] via NROs The Corner:"According to Saudi officials, Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah told Assad last week during a meeting in Riyadh that he must immediately withdraw Syria's 14,000 soldiers in Lebanon.Strange saying for a dictator, unless the dictator realizes that his cohorts are pulling strings that he can't control. It also appears to confirm the longstanding belief that Assad is a novice in Syrian politics, let alone regional or world affairs. Of course, an alternative reading of this could be that Assad is on the verge of saying that Syria is a democracy since all someone in his position can do is be thwarted by the other parts of the government. Checks and balances and all. -- posted by Lawhawk » Lawhawk - Syria realigns some security forces in Lebanon http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/L/L... - it's rather curious that the Syrian soldiers would be flashing signs of victory when their movement is as a result of a strategic loss of power in the region brought about by weeks of protests in Lebanon plus the successful elections in Iraq.-- posted by Lawhawk » Lawhawk - Lebanon reinstates pro-Syrian leader http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/L/L... - less than three weeks after stepping down from office, Lebanon's president, emboldened by a massive pro-Syria demonstration, reinstated Omar Karami as prime minister on Thursday, 10 days after the Damascus-backed leader stepped down under popular and international pressure. It makes you wonder just what kind of pressure Lebanon's president was under from Syria. The Hizbullah demonstrations were stocked with mostly Syrians and Palestinian refugees, not Lebanese. The numbers were greatly inflated by this simple fact, and early reports that the numbers topped 500,000 for the pro-Syria demonstrations are clearly wrong based on simple demographics. Syria is trying to influence the outcome the only way it can, and may be winning unless the pro-freedom groups have a few more tricks up their sleeves. -- posted by Lawhawk » Lawhawk - Today's assessment of demonstrations... http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/a...Ed thinks that things are tilting definitively in the direction of the pro-Lebanese factions. -- posted by Lawhawk » Lawhawk - Photos of the demonstrations... http://www.nationalreview.com/thecorner/...-- posted by Lawhawk » Lawhawk - UN Peacekeeping on Israel/Syria border: Absence of failure http://slate.msn.com/id/2116785/entry/0/ - claims that the peacekeepers are doing their jobs, but it clearly doesn't include incidents where peacekeepers allowed terrorists to use UN labelled vehicles for attacks, or peacekeepers who looked the other way when attacking and kidnapping Israeli soldiers from near the border.-- posted by Lawhawk » Lawhawk - Too soon to tell if Syria has withdrawn all troops http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4...UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has said it is too early to definitively say whether Syria has withdrawn all its troops from Lebanon.Odds are that they'll say that the Syrians have withdrawn, while looking the other way as Syrian intel runs all over the country making mischief and mayhem in the run up to the Lebanese elections at the end of May. -- posted by Lawhawk « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
