» Gay_Klok - Your great article
That was so interesting, In Australia, the Amelanchier is not very well known. There was a tree in the garden of our town house when we bought many years ago. I did not know what it was but strangely [after reading your article makes it strange] I hastily picked some and made a bouquet for my mother to take to Sydney for the funeral of an Aunt of mine. When we started the garden in the country, I transferred a seedling from the town garden. I can guarantee the taste of the berries - I now have dozens of seedlings growing up all over the country garden, no doubt transferred by the greedy peafowl and native birds. I made a corner and planted a grove of them but now I have to consider them as weeds and pull the seedlings out. Perhaps I should try some of the wine and get in before the birds.
It is a pity the flowers leave us so quickly but I love the red-brown colour of the new leaves that come out with the flowers - a delightful picture. And we do get good Autumn colour too.
Sometimes the leaves are ruined by the cherry slug but I wouldn't be without my June berry that flowers in October here!

» Treeman - Fragrance?
A reader wrote me to ask the fllowing Question:
Have you ever heard of pronounced fragrance in Amelanchier?
My Response:
I did a little digging in Dirr and the only reference he makes to flower scent is that A. arborea has a slightly maloderous scent to the flower. he makes no other references to fragrance. Didn't notice any anywhere else, either.

The Serviceberry that grows on seaside cliffs here smells quite awful, of feet, or parmesan cheese, if you go up to it and take a deep whiff. It's not really strong and you probably wouldn't notice unless you stuck your nose right in like I did. I think they are Amelanchier alnifolia but I could be wrong.-- posted by Jojo
