» Treeman - Do you have an Opinion?

Did my poll not adequately represent your feelings? Then, please feel free to state your opinions regarding a National Tree here. I'm not starting a crusade, I'm just curious if others feel the way I do.

» doveflys - National Tree

This article is thought provoking. You ask if there is one tree representative of our nation from the arctic to the tropics. Dont know. Do we have one tree like that which has not been included in the list of options provided when you vote? I've never researched this.

Hey Lou, you provoke a few thoughts in me too. A wonder tree that will survive in all climates, let alone thrive? Alas no, at least not that I am aware of. Since the NADF's poll list is strictly made up of state trees, it leaves out some of the more widely adaptable species that are either introduced in some states and so common in others that they are disregarded as state tree candidates. State trees tend to be those that represent the particular state.

Perhaps I should ask is there one tree that embraces the spirit of the U.S.? Which tree expresses a love of freedom, rugged individuality, and a willingness to give of its self? Perhaps a national tree need not be found nationwide, just be recognized nationwide as symbolic of our ideals. There are some good candidates available for these criteria. Some are on the NADF list and some are notably absent.

Now, I guess I still lean towards the idea that we don't need a national tree per se, only a national attitude towards trees. Lets revel in our diversity that weaves itself together accross our land through the landscape.

So if you were to choose, what would your choice be? (given the new criteria above)

» Tom - National Tree?

That's a hard one..... We have a lot of beautiful trees across our land, and a lot of various species mean different things to different folks. The Apple comes to mind, then the Great Northern Pine and Maple. But, as a national symbol, I had to vote for the Oak.

Gosh Tom, two tough candidates, the Apple and the Oak. They remind me of tales of the debate when we were choosing a national bird. Ben Franklin reportedly favored the Wild Turkey for various reasons over the Bald Eagle. I think the apple vs the oak evokes the same conundrum. The apple is inherently practical, but the oak has such a noble image. Tough choice. I probably would have voted with Ben on the bird question...now I must ponder the apple vs the oak...later.

» Tom - The Mighty Oak....

Hi Wes,

I got an E-mail this AM from the Arbor Org. stating that the Oak was the winner, and the Redwood was second...... I voted for the Oak, and I'm glad it won! Lol, I guess the poor Apple tree will just have to be content with producing apples..... Have a good one!
