» Sheila13 - preserving apples

I am wondering how to preserve dried apples for longer than a year. Is there a chemical other than sulfite to preserve them with for CRAFT purposes. I have seen dried apple slices in potpourris and have wondered what they use for preserving them. Can you help me?

Is there a sealant of some kind? Like a fruit glaze that I could dip my craft project in?

Thank You,
Sheila

Hello Sheila,
Sorry I don't have an answer for you. However, the Suite101 people in the arts and crafts section probably would have a good answer. Go to

I would like to know the difference between food spoilage and deteration. Is it that meat deterates and veggies spoil, is it the different enzymes?

I didn't think there was a difference between the terms spoilage and deterioration. Spoilage of food can be a change in color or texture to outright rotten food. Deterioration implies a change in the quality of the food. They could both mean the same things. However, I am not a food microbiologist and they may have very particular definitions for these terms that I do not know.
