I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this problem. I was presented with a mixed culture containing either a yeast, an algae, a protozoan, a mycoplasma, or a typical bacterium. What course of investigation can I take to determine what "beast" I am dealing with. Thanks

I would first of all look at the organisms under a microscope. Yeasts, protozoans, and algae are much bigger than bacteria and contain organelles.

As I understand, fastidious organisms are those which require certain nutrients and or other conditions to carry out their life cycles or even live at all. These organisms will not grow unless the media used contain these nutrients and are correctly cultured (i.e. temp, anerobic, areobic, salt content, etc... etc...
As far as the commonest type for a UTI, I really don't know the answer, but I'd be willing to bet that it's an enterobacteriaceae. The NCCLS publishes tables for containing info on fastidious and nonfastidious organisms. try their web site for a more definative answer.
