» Squiggles4 - The current rise of affective illness

Thank you for the opportunity to join the discussions at Suite101.com

Perhaps it simply my impression, but it seems to me that there is a rise in depression among the population in the United States and Canada, simply from my own media watch.

If this is so, I wonder if perhaps depression has not always been there, but just not diagnosed. One thing I notice is the effect of the media on the "stigma" of such mental disabilities. I think that the more it is exposed and even linked to famous people, the less "stigmatized" it is.

This may be a good thing, but in general I would say that our society is not geared towards accommodating the depressed and others, with glee. I suppose from that you can derive certain conclusions.

Thanks for the wonderful work you are doing, and I enjoyed reading Lawrence Stevens' article on this subject.
