More than Bipolar
This archived discussion is "read only".
» Druid16 - Bipolar with extras Amy- I am 28 years old and found out last year I was Bipolar. I was Clinically diagnosed as Bipolar, rapid cycling, mixed mania, severe agrophobia, with PTSD. I have spent the last 11 months in pure hell. Medications adjustments, medication side effects, suicide attempts, hospital stays, and too many doctors to count. I cannot hold down a job due to my instability a this point which leaves me very frustrated. So I have applied for disability or SSI through MHMR(mental health services). Yet they tell me I probably won't get it because the government doesn't see mental illness as a disability. I understand that I still have all my limbs attached, a high school graduate, and scored highly above average on the testing ,but the results are still the same. I am a person trying to live in this world with a mental illness that most people don't understand. It's not the money that's so important as it is the hospital care. Just the peace of knowing that when those thoughts of suicide hit you you can get help instead of wanting to go through with it so you don't create another bill. It's a never ending battle. I think not only do people need to be more educated about mental illnesses, but so does our very own government. After all they help everybody else.-- posted by Druid16 » katrina0556 - Hi, Hi,Perhaps you are getting some misinformation because I was told that depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are considered disabilities. However, you must be fully disabled in order to get mental disability benefits. When I applied for disability, everyone told me I'd get disapproved and it would take years to get approval. Well, I carefully filled out the forms myself and was approved. It didn't take years either. Try not to let people discourage you. It's best to be very thorough when filling out the paperwork. I am bipolar also. I hope things work out well for you. -- posted by katrina0556
