It is a joy to recall times of commond ground for the universal Church. Such reforms of monasticism in the Western Christian Church remain a source of inspiration for the Eastern Christian Church, as well as we hope that the rules of Saint Pachomius and Saint Basil are inspiring the West. -- posted by StefanC » Basil - Ah - Pachomius and Basil - critical influences in the developmen Ah - Pachomius and Basil - critical influences in the development of Western Monasticism.For those less familiar with these two towering monastic figures, Pachomius is generally credited with the development of cenobitical monasticism, i.e. communal monastic life (prior to Pachomius monks were hermits). Basil was both bishop of Cappadocia as author of two Rules for monastic life - the Long Rule and the Short Rule. Perhaps a bit on this subject is in order after the cycle on the Plan of St. Gall is complete Raymond St. George -- posted by Basil
