Excellent observation! In fact, there is significant evidence that monastic planning has its roots in Roman city planning which in turn is based on Roman military camp planning.

Also, the monastic enclave was at heart a type of utopian commune - or tried to be. There were even mystical writings which described the Third Age of Man as the Age of the Spirit and monks were seen as the manifestiation of this Age. The theory went that each person of the Trinity dominated history through certian Ages in preperation for the final coming of the Kingdom.
