When it comes to which of Bach's music has had the greatest influence on me and on the rest of the world, I will have to vote for his chorale settings which have forever changed the mode of worship in protestant churches. For many or his settings, I can hear all four parts in my mind clearly. I can really get carried away playing or singing them.In oratorio rehearsals and performances, those chorales can melt hearts of stone. None of the great choruses or solos can compete with them.
To people who have not grown up in church, the piano pieces which Bach wrote for his children and his wife probably had the greatest influence. There isn't a pianist who hasn't played many of them, and I have never taught any students who did not consider those the most beautiful of any pieces they had to learn.
