...to discover that I had my doubts about CCM and its implications for ELCA. I personally thought it rather audacious of the Episcopal Church (ECUSA) to foist our theology of the episcopate on ELCA like that. I do, however, ascribe to the belief, and am hoping as the author of the essay you linked to that a creative solution can be found. I was surprised to hear that CCM was even passed by ELCA. I think if the reverse had been proposed, I would be just as upset. I think the issue has less to do with the unity of the church than with the question of authority, something we of ECUSA have long struggled with. The reality of life in ECUSA is that bishops can pretty much do what they want, and there's little that can be done to reign in an outrageously unorthodox bishop short of putting him/her on trial for heresy, an ugly, extreme measure that seldom appeases anyone.
