» biogardener - College of Cardinals
John, do you know how many of the 117 cardinals were appointed by the last pope? Considering the length of his reign and the normal age of cardinals, there can't be that many who predate him. I am writing an article along the lines of yours, and I would like to include that information but have been unable to find it.-- posted by biogardener

In response to College of Cardinals posted by biogardener:I believe from what I've read only 3 of the eligible voting cardinals were NOT appointed by John Paul II. I would assume they must be in their late 70's.

I suspected that much, but I was only guessing.I heard yesterday that the deceased pope put something in place which will assure that the voting will be over in 3 or 4 days at the most. A few minutes ago, I received a breaking news advisory from ABC News saying that the first vote is over and did not yield a result.

In response to Sounds reasonable posted by biogardener:John Paul II modified the rules so that after I believe after 30 or 33 ballots, if no pope has been elected then a simple majority goes into effect. Otherwise, it is a 2/3 majority vote.
The reigning pontiff cannot name his successor, but he can certainly influence how his successor is elected. And having been pontiff for 26 years and naming over 90% of the current voters, you can see that this pontiff has more sway over the future of the Catholic church that Richard Nixon did in naming justices to the Supreme Court, which had a Nixonian influence long after President Nixon resigned.

» biogardener - Number of Cardinals
As mentioned above, I previously heard that there were 117 cardinals, but today I heard that there are 115. I also heard that Ratzinger was at the Vatican for 24 years, longer than any other. What I am now waiting to see is whether Ratzinger can lay down the role of the enforcer which was assigned to him by his predecessor and become the pastor of the flock. People who know him personally say that he has the personality to be able to do it. At his advanced age, however, many people consider that unlikely.
We will see.

In response to Number of Cardinals posted by biogardener:The missing two were not able to come due to health concerns. They were non-European, which made the European voting bloc have a majority of one (otherwise the non-European bloc would have been plus 1). Just can't remember their names off the top of my head.

Thanks, John. I will update my article to make the correction. I am glad that someone has a head for these details. I just remember the whys and wherefores, but if I want to remember the numbers, I have to write them down.-- posted by biogardener
