I don't know which story it's in, but Chesterton has Father Brown saying, "I mean that we here are on the wrong side of the tapestry. The things that happen here do not seem to mean anything; they mean something somewhere else."

I'm guessing that the imagery goes back a lot farther than that.

I imagine the image is as old as creation. There is always a "better" side and an "uglier" side to things. Which side of a plate do you eat from? Which side of a hide is close to the skin (and hidden) and which is showier and to the outside? My mom and wife do counted cross stitch and embroidery and it's true. One side looks like a jumbled mess; turn it over, and you have a piece of art. Someday we'll be able to look back with our Master at the art of our life, though it seems a disheveled mess right now.

It's a Wonderful Life and other movies make this point as well. We often see the bad things and how they hurt; but in the big picture, something good always comes from the bad.

John
