» Bigcat75 - Nasty Itchy Feet what caused it?

About a year ago my local hospital gave me an overdose of penicillin and basicaly poisoned me,it was in my own good they told me as they were treating accute laberinthitas (inner ear infection) this poison caused me to itch like you wanted to rip your skin off! all over, but, hey my doctor told me to stop taking the drug which i did and it stopped. BUT know every now and again at night as soon as i go to bed my feet start to itch and you now what it's like! you try to ignor it because you now if you scratch it will only get worse. There are no blemishes, no marks, no signes, just the god awfull itching, and it CANNOT be ignored it's driving you mad? Try putting your feet under cold running water until they go numb go back to bed without drying them and you will be able to sleep for several hours (better than the creams). My Doctor tells me that something (in my case penicillin poisoning) starts it up and that's it you have it for life (off and on) so to all fellow sufferers try the cold water and if you are lying there dying to rip your feet off remember YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

» former_BC_gal - itchy hands and feet

I, too, suffer from itchy hands and feet, as do my husband and daughter, although none of us suffer from lupus. In all our cases, these symptoms are due to allergies/intolerances to things we eat or drink. The symptoms come on within minutes for my husband, and within hours for me. My daughter just started showing the symptoms, and hers come on about 8 hours after dinner.
In my case, I exhibit this symptom due to a sensitivity to Tylenol, so I never take it any more. My husband has this reaction to peppers (both hot and mild) as well as MSG and tomatoes. I imagine eventually he will have to take Benedryl every time he eats a member of the nightshade family. I believe my daughter may also show this symptom in response to tomatoes, although I haven't tried eliminating them from her diet yet. Like father, like daughter.
My advice to all who experience this is to keep a food log. Write down everything you eat during the day, and keep track of when your symptoms start. Look for foods or medicines you took in the previous 12 hours or so. Remember, you may be allergic to more than one thing, so be patient and thorough.
Once you think you know what you're reacting to, don't take it any more. This may mean a change in prescription, if you think you're reacting to your medication. Talk to your doctor.
If you only get this sometimes, you may be allergic to medications you take occasionally, like Tylenol. If you get it every day, you need to look at those things you eat all the time. Eggs, Milk products, and Wheat, are good things to try eliminating first. There is lots of good information about common allergens on the Web, which you can use to guide your diet trials.
Good Luck!

» former_BC_gal - Try This! for itchy hands and feet

I also suffer from itchy hands and feet, as do my husband and youngest daughter, although none of us suffer from lupus. Our symptoms are from allergies/intolerances to things we eat in the minutes to hours preceding an attack.

I itch in response to Tylenol, which I have stopped taking. My husband itches when he eats MSG, peppers, both hot and mild, and tomatoes. I imagine that soon he will have to take Benedryl every time he eats members of the Nightshade Family.

My two-year-old daughter just started having symptoms in the middle of the night about 2 weeks ago, and wakes up scratching, and asking me to scratch, her hands and feet for about an hour. Just tonight I realized it's probably in response to tomatoes, like her father. Too bad, because she absolutely loves them!

My advice to anyone who has itchy hands and/or feet without any known cause, is to try to remember what you ate within the last 12 hours. You could also try keeping a food/symptom diary, to try to find out what you're eating that triggers your reaction.

Itching in the middle of the night is probably due to something eaten for dinner. Constant itching is probably due to something you eat throughout the day. Very occasional itching is probably due to something done only occasionally, like taking pain or other medications, or indulging in special treats.

If you think you know what is giving you symptoms, take the suspected substance, and time how long it takes to get a reaction. Take Benedryl or another antihistamine to stop the reaction, if you tolerate it.

Once you know what is giving you the itch, stop taking it! It may be hard, because it may be something you love and crave, or need to take, like medicine. Talk to your doctor, as many conditions have alternate medicines that may work for you.

Finally, I have heard that allergy shots for mainstream medicine afficionados, or homeopathy for the alternative crowd, may offer some relief.

I have had a nightmare problem with itching on the palms of my hands for about 5 years now. The problem started when I ws put on antidepressants. Within a couple of days of starting the pills, the itching began. When I stopped the pills, the itching continued.

It is not like a skin itch as it seems much deeper that that under the surface. When it is very bad I will scratch (particularly at night) until the skin cracks open. When this happens, an unusual light orange coloured discharge can occur.

I have given up on doctors. They tried increasing doses of steroid creams and eventually gave me oral steroids. When they talked about increasing the dosage of these, I walked away.

Sometimes my hands are so badly injured by the itching that I am virtually incapacitated by it.

I have tried diet changes but to little avail.

I will try the manuka honey idea and investigate the helicobacterer pylori suggestion.

Thank you

In response to Re: RE;Itchy hands and Feet posted by Kiwitim:

I am blown away by how many people seem to experience the SAME symptoms as I do!

For me it started suddenly, last December, on an overseas flight. When I arrived home, I could not stop scratching the palms of my hands. It got so bad that I tried EVERYTHING I had in my medicine cabinet, to help stop the itch.

The experience is exactly how many of you have described it: not on the surface, but more located deeper below the skin. Scratching will produce 'hives' and swellings.

By now, I also have had acute itching in the soles of my feet, as well as on top of both my feet and my hands. At times, I also have itches on other parts of my body, which go away relatively fast. The hand and feet itch, however, is recurring now for months! Just like many of you stated, it is driving me crazy! And also just like many of you experienced, no medical help or solution seems to be available (Cortisone cream was suggested, as well as anti-histamines).

I have tried to isolate what I might have ingested or come in contact with, that might have caused this reaction.

Because I have arthritis, I take Glucosamine sulfate, MSM, Chondroitin, Aspirin, at times Tylanol, when this all began, I also took diuretics to lower blood pressure, and Lipitor for cholsterol. I feel if we all would list our medications, hopefully we could discerne a pattern. Even if it is not a medication, but a food allergy, this would help. I have tried to isolate what I eat, to see if anything makes a difference - with no identifyable effect so far. The itch bouts come on indiscriminately.

I now go to the pool every morning for an hour, which cools me thoroughly. This helps keep the itch away for most of the day. But it still 'rears its ugly head' without warning. If I can refrain from scratching, the bout will not last as long.

I hope to hear from many more of you, so we can find an answer to this puzzling phenomenon!

I also wanted to mention that I feel a strong burning sensation in the tip of my big toes, and lately also in the tip of my thumb! It almost feels as if I had physically burned myself there.

» intanet - Me Too

I find this very curious that so many people are experiencing this recently. I had this in 2004 for a few months. It felt like it was never gonna end but it did. There was no help from the doctors or dermatologist. Just expensive creams and cortizone creams which did nothing. I would soak my hands in a bowl of water with ice cubes floating around just to cool the itch. Anyhow, it seems to be kicking up again. The itching began last night and the swelling this morning. I took off my wedding ring and got if off just in time. I just took a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar. Not saying anything about it helping but I'm figuring this condition is caused by something in the blood and vinegar is a blood cleanser. So is cayenne and garlic. But I'm fishing here. Don't know what it is really. I'm one of those fortunate people who gets things like that. Well, here's to all of us sufferers finding the cure in Jesus' name.

» sachmo - itchy palms and bottoms of feet...

I'm a 31yr old male living in the mid-west, suburbs.
Just two weeks ago I think I was bitten by a spider when I was sleeping. I have been bitten by many spiders before so I know spider bites. Since then, I have gotten the infamous itchy palms and feet. I have also had numerous rashes on my hands, arms, chest / neck. I have changed shampoo, soap, I'm not allergic to anything that I am aware of. Two dogs and a cat, and have lived in my current residence for 5 months. Food choices haven't changed, and my girlfriend says she still uses the same laundry detergent as she always has. The only thing I can think of is the spider bite.
My itchyness comes at night while I sleep. It wakes me up, and I scratch until it hurts. My fingers get swollen and sore in the mornings, then goes away during the days. Some nights are worse than others. Why only at night???
I am seeing my Dr. in the morning, but I have a feeling he will tell me the same as all of your doctors have told you.
