Itchy hands and feet?

Did your rheumy say whether your hives and swelling were a direct symptom of your lupus, or are they a side effect of your meds? If it's your meds, some adjustment in dosage or medication might bring you some relief. Atarax is an anti-anxiety drug that is also an antihistamine -- Sort of like a "super-benadryl". I'm really glad that it's working for you! Does it help with the swelling as well as the itching? A rheumy that I was seeing once injected cortisone into my hip (without telling me that was what he was doing) and I was in excruciating pain for months afterward! I don't know much about nerve pathways in the hips/pelvis, but I swear he shoved that needle into my sciatic nerve! Jill, I'm really sorry to hear about all your health problems, but I'm really glad that you've found your way here! Most of us have been where you are now, and you'll always find a sympathetic ear and friendly advice to help you get through the rough patches! Keep us informed of how you're doing, and I hope that the Atarax keeps working for you!
-- posted by scottishgirl » bertnFL - Thank God I Found You People!!! I have not been diagnosed with any thing that I am reading at this group, Lupus, Sjogrens, or even Raynaud's Disease.I am a male 32 and I feel like an 80 year old man. Everything that I am reading here totally reflects what I have been going through for about 2 1/2 years. The hives, swollen lips, migrating joint pain, itch hands and feet, and either soaking my feet in scalding hot water even trying ice packs....anything that will give me some relief. I have been told by doctors it is nerves, allergic reactions, Arthritis, and even told that I was a just worrying too much. I have had such a bad attack from about 6 PM yesterday evening till today when I got home from work. I even took my left shoe off when I was driving just so I could scratch it. I ran in the house loaded up the tub with water, and soaked my feet for about 1/2 hour. It felt so good to soak them that my eyes just about rolled back in my head. Now that I have gone on way too much already, how would any of you approach a doctor about this without seeming too cocky? Also, are there blood tests for this, how can they tell? -- posted by bertnFL » scottishgirl - Re: Thank God I Found You People!!! In response to message posted by bertnFL:Hi Bert! You don't have to seem cocky to ask questions and raise issues with your doctor. :-) If you haven't already, read my article about lupus that lists the 11 criteria that the AMA recognizes for lupus diagnosis. Tell your doctor that you're concerned that you have "X" number of symptoms on the list, and you'd like to be referred to a good rheumatologist. If s/he won't refer you, ask around or start shopping on your own for a rheumatologist that will evaluate you for lupus or another autoimmune disease. Your description of itchy feet sounds much like a Raynaud's symptom. My feet get very itchy like that after an attack and the blood is rushing back into them. "Pins and Needles" doesn't even begin to cover it! I'm very glad that you found us, and I hope that you stick around! Please stay in touch and let us know how it goes with the doctor! If you need a helping hand or even just an ear to listen to you, we're right here!

Yes, my rheumy said that the swelling and hives are a direct symptom of the lupus. I will email you a picture of the last flare up I had so you can get an idea of what I am talking about...its pretty gross! I've been doing well since the week of 6/22 with the exception of severe nausea from the Imuran. I've emailed my rheumy about it and hopefully we can clear that up. I can't tell you how your site has helped me. It is really comforting to know there are people who understand. I am getting there with this blasted chest cold now...so far no real flare up of the Lupie! Hello Bert and Jill, gosh it is so nice to see and hear from new people. I am GLAD you both found us! Jill that is great news! And Bert GET IN YOUR DOCTORS FACE ! We have to learn to take care of our selves! I wish you hope and relief. Don't you want to scratch your soles of your feet off? HAve a good night be back soon! -- posted by micklady » scottishgirl - Hi Mickie! In response to message posted by micklady:I'm glad that your cold hasn't triggered a flare! (You never can tell what'll set you off, can you?) You have to get well soon -- Football season is coming up, isn't it? (Go Giants!) ;-) Jill, I got your email. Wow. You poor thing!! I'm glad that the Atarax is reducing the swelling. I bet you couldn't even eat when your lips were so swollen! I haven't heard of a lupus reaction quite like that -- Usually a swelling like that is an allergy-involved thing. Have you tried ginger for the nausea? A good ginger ale (with actual ginger in it) may also help. If you can't find any, get some gingerroot from the grocer or health food store, shave some thin slices into boiling water and steep for about 10 minutes. It really helps! Your rash/swelling is really unusual. I guess I'm lucky in that I get the more "traditional" red, raised rash on my face when I flare up. It's ugly and it itches, but at least it doesn't hurt and I can eat. I think you're extremely strong and brave to tolerate a discomfort like that so well! If it had been me, I'd be hollering and kvetching 24/7! You're a real trooper and an inspiration to me to keep my chin up! Thank you for that! I'm going to go try to get this house cleaned. We've got family here from overseas and I've been too busy with holidays and birthdays to do any real cleaning. I hope you all have a stress-free, pain-free, soft and happy day!

I have been very active with scheduling Dr.'s appointments. Your advice on reading all of those articles was like reading my own life for the past 2 1/2 years. Bert -- posted by bertnFL » scottishgirl - Re: Re: Re: Thank God I Found You People!!! In response to message posted by bertnFL:Hey Bert! I know exactly what you mean. When I found out I had lupus, almost my first reaction was, "Oh, thank God it's something real!" It may seem silly, but most of us feel that way, after months or years of docs, friends, even family telling us that we're "just tired" or "just bored" or "just out of shape." I think a rheumy will be really helpful in getting you on track, Bert. Even if it's not lupus, s/he'll be able to sort it out if it's an autoimmune disease. (There are about 100 separate ones.) I've got my fingers crossed for you, and please let us know how it goes!

Last night was the first in TWO weeks I did not wake up to and COUGH ! Getting better, it just takes me forever to beat the simple, everyday cold! Bert sure hope you will get more answers! Hang in there and keep us posted! It looks like it will be a glorious weekend here in NJ. Oh and Karyn, we just got the season tickets for the GIANTS...and my Fall cataloge for Cabela's just arrived....I will have to see if there is anything interesting for "staying dry and warm" at the games!
