Hi all you unfortunate scratchers like myself.
Yes!!! it is so darn painful to sit up in bed in the middle of the night scratching your feet till they are red raw and bleeding.
My palms too are just the same but they do not bleed. It is awful and yet no one seems to know any cure for this what I think is quite a common ailment now. People and friends say "try not to scratch" but you jolly well have to, I would pick any sharp instument up and scratch with that, even if it is a knife, I would use it because I get fed up with being in such silly positions in bed to scratch my feet. It is no joke and I have not yet seen any doctors about it.
One thing I do think helps is "E45 Cream".
But even then I am still scratching, but it does make the scratching more slippery.
As I type this I have to keep stopping to scratch my palms. Ask yourself "is it anything to do with going through the "menopause".
I am 54 and only started ithing some months ago.
Is it people of my age or of a similar age who suffer with this?
The only thing I can say to you all is "Try not to scratch" But I know it is impossible not to scratch.
After a really bad night last night and making my feet really saw and some open wounds too, I had to go to work this morning. It was a difficult task to even put my socks on as well as my boots. I am on my feet nearly 12 hours a day, and yesterday was so painful it was heaven to get home and take off my boots and socks.
The socks were actually stuck to the open wounds.
I then filled my foot spar with luke warm water and a little aromatic oils. That helped a little but still they were itching.
NOW!!!! Can anyone out there (even if you are a doctor) give us some information please.

Wow! I never realised that there were so many other people out there who, for one reason or another, suffer from this! Welcome to all the newbies and I'm glad that you found us!

There are loads of reasons why a person's hands or feet itch. Sometimes a doc can find the reason, but sometimes she can't. If I could make a suggestion, read back through the 100+ posts in this discussion, from the beginning, and see what others have to say about various reasons for the itching and what they've done to get relief. I know it's a time-eater, but even if you take it in small doses, you'll learn quite a lot and something might either give you an idea for a treatment, or give you something to suggest to your doc.

I really feel for you all. I think itching is a form of torture, really. It causes you to flay your own skin from your body, and you STILL don't get relief! I almost think I'd rather have straight-up pain!

Here's wishing you all an itch-free and pain-free day! Take Care of You!

» kbailey - relief for eczema & psoriasis

My little sister has battled with eczema and psoriasis for many years. Her flare-ups get worse when she is under stress. After years of spending big $$$ on prescription drugs and ointments which offered limited relief we stumbled upon what I consider to be the miracle treatment. Olive oil. Don't laugh. Her eczema would get so bad that the build-up would close her ear canals, create raised, red, raw areas on her scalp, elbows, arms and legs. Once she started using the Olive oil on it the results were dramatic. It would take a couple of weeks to clear up but it would clear up! She used it like lotion after her morning shower and again just before going to bed. Her husband said she smelled like a salad but heck, it worked, so who cares? Try extra virgin olive oil and see for yourself. It will also get rid of planter warts. Same sister had a knee-cap covered with planter warts when she was 12 years old. Older family friend told my parents to tape a cotton ball soaked with olive oil over the wart every night and it would eventually disappear. It did. I've also found it works well for dry skin. Personally, I find it a bit too sticky to apply the oil right out of the bottle so I tried the spray on type. Worked just the same.

I too used to have psoriasis on my upper arms. Used the olive oil for about a month, twice a day as above, and its never returned.

So, if you are tired of applying creams, drugs and chemicals on your psoriasis and/or eczema and not getting much in the way of results give the olive oil a try. What have you got to loose?

Olive oil? Well, why the heck not? smile Most of the old "home remedies" come from some kernel of truth that modern medical science is only now getting around to verifying. (ie: willowbark for mild pain, valerian for anxiety, etc.)

Unless you have food allergies, it's a given that there won't be any side effects, so give it a go! Thanks for sharing that with us!

» barbeehd - Liver disorders and itchy skin

I woke up with itchy palms, feet, and some places on my body. I read all your emails and then went to Barnes and Noble to look this up. Its called pruritis (itching) and can be related to liver disorder, called Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (not from drinking). About 80% of people with PBC have this itching, and its worse at night. I am going to see my doc ASAP and get some blood tests done to see if its what I have. Also, I found liquid Benedryl at Target and I wipe it all over my itches whenever I need to. this is an awful thing. I can't get it to subside, and I have tried Hydocortisone without any relief. At first thought i ate something, but it has persisted and I know its something else. A really good book on the liver is Hepatitis and Liver Disease by Melissa Palmer, MD.

For those of you who suffer from psoriasis, try this remedy if the olive oil doesn't give you relief.

6 tablespoons of dark flaxseed (golden may be substituted if you absolutely can't get the dark, but dark is better.) This is available at any health food store.

1 level teaspoon of cream of tartar

2 cups of boiling water

Put flaxseed in a 2 cup measuring cup, add cream of tartar. Pour boiling water into cup. Stir and let set overnight at room temperature.

In the morning, before you eat anything pour the liquid from the top of the mixture into a glass and drink it. Then take a tablespoon of the flaxseed.

Do this every other day for one week, then 3 times a week for the next week. After doing this for a month, cut down to once a week. Your psoriasis should be long gone by this time, but still take once a week. A cheap and easy recipe that alleviates the psoriasis and the itching.

Since I started using this home remedie, I've never had another bout of psoriasis. I take it once a week faithfully.

Thanks, Mary! I'm very glad that you get relief from that. It sounds so simple! I may give it a try for my lupus rash during my next flare.

Thanks again, and Take Care of You!

» HBKris - Itching diagnosis?

I am surprised that in the many messages I have looked back on, no one has mentioned dermatographia (literally 'skin writing'). I went to allergist with severe itching that resulted in raised welts when scratched. Dermatographia was diagnosed, and I am on double-dose of Allegra (antihistimine) to control what is basically a mask-cell breakdown and histimine response (similar to allergic responses). It is systemic, so topical creams really don't work - although cold water does. Feet and palms are worst in the AM, but the raised welts are all day. So far, the Allegra just controls the itch. No cause, and no guess as to duration. I was scared to read of other possibilities (Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, Lupus). But, I just don't have the other symptoms. No joint pain, and still competitive triathlete. Still, I will keep abreast of new symptoms. This came on suddenly a week ago, and has not subsided.

» Kay61 - Re: Re: itchy feet and hands

Hi,
As I am going on 4 years straight with this problem & wanted to give you guys an update. Unfortunately there is no change whatsoever. I also come up with Lupus & other diseases when I search the symptoms for hand & foot itching.

I don't have one other symptom of anything listed for these diseases. I also want to add some things I've learned on my own.

The itching started after ending a 3 month low-carb diet where I ate hardly any grains. I explained this to a dermatologist & he said it may very well be what I reintroduced to my diet. Seeing the only foods I changed/added were grains he suggested an elimination diet. I have yet to stay on this, wheat is in everything! But I am attempting it again. I must stay on it for 3-4 weeks to see if I have relief. PS I have tried a few times & did notice a bit less itchy after a week or more.

Next I went to the allergist who tested me with skin test & blood allergy testing for all grains, citric, & other foods & found no allergies but he said because I know the itching started when I began eating grains again that there may be something in the processing in those foods that is causing it & I may never find out what it is; not very incouraging. I am determined to finish out a good long period w/out these foods to see if I have some relief. Thank god I have Zyrtec; I only take 5mg every other day but when its wearing off the itching reminds me to take it.
By now I think I would have ruined my hands & feet with scratching if I hadn't had this medication.
As a side note: I do have ezcema in one other area but that itching is normal surface itch totally different. The foot & hands is an Under the Skin feeling, its unbelievable. Also I never get a rash, hives or anything, to look at my hands & feet they appear perfectly normal & healthy. I hope this helps someone! Karen
