In response to message posted by lfleming:Hello! I'm new to this site, and to the disease. My year "diagnosis anniversary" is coming up in a few weeks... It feels great to know that there are others out there just like me! I was on 60mg of prednisone for several months, and had the same symptoms...moon face, buffalo back. I was extremely miserable with my appearance too! I thought it was all in my imagination that the extra weight "hurt." My advice to you is exactly what Charisssa said... Diet and exercise are key! After my dosage of Prednisone started lowering, I got back into the gym and started walking again. I've always been an athlete & extremely physically fit... so I was definitely miserable being fat! I took it day by day, listened to my body and exercised whenever I felt good enough...I watched what I ate, and the more the prednisone went down, so did my weight. Don't get me wrong, the weight doesn't fly off, but I have noticed a difference. After several weeks of reducing my prednisone intake, the doctors have increased it once more. I feel the moon face coming back! But I am confident that if I keep up my exercise regiment, and keep eating well, that the bloating effect won't be as bad, and won't last as long! Not to mention the great effects that proper exercise & nutrition have for us Lupies!... Keep your head up, and so will I!!! We're not alone

» Evelyntilley - Prednisone
My name is Evelyn and I have had massive Rheumatoid Arthritis for over a year. I also have Rheumatoid lungs. I've been told that the RA damaged my lungs even before the RA was diagnosed. My Rheumatologist put me on 10 mg of Prednisone to help with the inflamation of my joints and to help my breathing. It did not really help. I continued to have bad flare-ups. My arthritis medicne was changed and that seemed to help the pain but not the breathing.I was put on oxygen in October 2002. I am gaining weight and no amount of dieting or exercise seems to be of help. My question is - do I really need the Prednisone? What are the dangers of coming off the prednisone? The increase in weight bothers my breathing. Does someone else have this problem and how do you deal with it?-- posted by Evelyntilley

In response to message posted by Evelyntilley:Hello Evelyn, nice to see you stop in here! First I would suggest talking to your Rheumy first! And my questions are the same as yours...Why take it if it is not working OR would I higher dose help? the problem with this drug s is the double - edge sword I call it. it has many pros and cons to take. One very improtant thing about stoping it is you must wean or slowly taper the dose. Or you can put many functions in the body, thru a shock wave!
I hope you find some answers!

In response to message posted by HapEness:DEAR MY LUPUS FRIEND.
DID I LOOK IN THE MIRROR. I TOO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING THRU. I HAVE BEEN ON AND OFF PREDNISONE FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS. IT IS YUCKY. I TOO AM A BLOWFISH. I THINK THAT MAYBE WE CAN GET A SUPPORT GROUP GOING....BLOWFISH ANNONYNMOUS. WELL IT IS A COMBO OF A CAMEL AND BLOWFISH SO THAT WOULD BE A BLOWMEL..........I DEVELOPED DIABETES DUE TO THE MED ALONG WITH A HUGE WEIGHT GAIN. I SHOULD HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF KIDS BY NOW, THE LAST TIME I GAINED THIS MUCH WEIGHT........THEY WERE TELLING ME TO PUSH. SURELY THERE IS A MED THAT CANNOT COMBAT THIS MAD DISEASE AND YET NOT GIVE YOU 10 OTHERS. HANG IN THERE I SEE THE LIGHT.........OH WAIT IT IS THE COPS PULLING ME OVER...JUST KIDDING. HAD TO GET SOME HUMOUR. WELL IF WE ARE GOING TO LOOK LIKE BLOMEL JUST THINK HOW LONG A CAMEL CAN GO WITHOUT WATER IN THE DESERT. WELL I FEEL LIKE MY HUMP IS FULL OF LOVE AND COMPASSION FOR OTHER FELLOW LUPUS FLOWERS, THAT DOES NOT NEED TO REFILL THAT OFTEN FOR IT LAST ALONG WHILE. I WISH THAT YOU ALL ARE WELL AND KEEP OUT OF THE ER AND OTHER PLACES THAT WE HAVE TO SOMETIMES GATHER. IT WOULD BE NICE IF GOD WOULD GRANT US ALL LUPUS FREE WEEK.......A WHOLE WEEK WITH NO SYMPTOMS AND SO MUCH ENERGY THAT WE CLEAN OUR HOUSE AND THE WHOLE CULDESAC.........WELL DO NOT PUSH IT TOO FAR. IF I COULD I WOULD GRANT THIS TO YOU ALL..FOR A SMALL NOMINAL FEE................JUST KIDDING.
I HOPE THAT YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT WEEK AND A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY.
ALL MY GREAT FRIENDS.
SHARA

I had to respond to the queries about the moon face and buffalo hump. As you reduce the dosage they do go away. I was on prednisone for 4 years and it was the worst experience of my life. I often wondered if I'd ever be "normal" again. I've been off two years this past Feb. I have reoccurrences of my lung troubles and do the 14 day "fix". I have learned not to panic when the urge to eat everything in the fridge gets me up a 3AM. I Settle for a bagel or fruit & eat it slowly! If you can walk or exercise daily if only for a short time. Last as pointed out above...drink water! You can't avoid it but consider the alternative.-- posted by klockswife
