In response to message posted by obeqaj:

I just had to respond to your question does prednisone have the capacity to hurt your kidneys, unfortunly yes. It can be a wonderful drug, but also can cause damages of all kind. I think that the best thing to do is to consult your M.D. re: your meds. I am not a doctor but I do know what the med did to me. It made me gain up to 229lbs, it made me have a diabetic problem. It caused problems with my kidneys and my heart. Since going off the med 2 months ago, I have lost 50lbs. I have started feeling alot better. No problems with the sugar, etc. I wish you good luck.

Hello Shara, so glad to see you jump in here ! I have been busy and unable to get back here until today.

Obeqaj, the pred can cause havioc however we do need it from time to time. It is very important to consult your doc with theses questions and concerns. When we are between the rock and a hard place, sometimes we have to choose the least evil thing. Good luck with your meds and the doc. Keep us informed!

In response to message posted by loopdedoo:

Hello,

My nameDeannaanna and I'm alsopredisonesone for Lupus. It is vfrustratingeing to say the least with the weight gain I have had. I'm only 5'1 and 1/2 and now weigh 178 lbs. My husband like yours says cut back on eating so much and I'm at the point where it almost makes me cry. He doesn't realize that a lot of it also is bloat. I know I have gained weight but I also know that a lot is bloat. My husband is a very supportive guy but when I start complaining about the weight gain that is usually his reply but says he loves me no matter how much I weigh but does worry about my health gaining all this weight on top of Lupus. I'm nowMetotrexatexate Predisonesone but I'm only now taking 2 MGS a daypredisonesone. I'm now having troubles with my sodium level being so low. I went to the Dr. yesterday about it and he said that could cause a lot of bloating and being extremely tired. My blood pressure is also a big concern right now it is so low. (90/60) I'm not sure if this is a side effect fpredisonesoneMethotrexatexate. I hope this gets to you. I'mdespertaleyaley wanting to find some friends with Lupus I can chat with. A person that only has Lupus can fully understand what we go through. Plee-mailmail me back.

In response to message posted by klockswife:

for klockswife: I just wanted to thank you for your encouraging words. I have a terrible moon face and have gained 60 pounds since going on prednisone 3 years ago for a rare degenerative bone disease. I am now so fat and miserable that I KNOW I must come off the drug, even though it helped me tremedously at first. I think the side effects have finally out weighed the benefits. Can you share with me your tapering off routine? I am currently down to 25 mg a day, but so far the moonface and weight have not really changed despite my strict diet. Please write back, I am so depressed, but hopeful to find others like me. Thanks.

» Supercub - Effects of Prednisone

I read with interest your comments on the use of Prednisone. I have been diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency and have been on pred for 4 years. Recently I was hospitalized with severe nausea and was unable to take (orally) prednisone without vomiting it back up. The only alternative was to go to the ER and get "plugged in". All the doctors have told me that without pred I will die. Following my hospital discharge I have been plagued by sores on my lips and a very foul stomach. I understand that while at the hospital I was infused with very high doses of steroids. Could this be the cause of these sores and rotten stomach? I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

» GameboyAdvance - ITP and Prednisone

I was diagnosed with ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocyto Penia)in 1998. I had very low platelet levels of around 7-14 instead of the normal 150-400, which meant that I bleed easily, sometimes just sneezing.

I was placed on the druPrednisonene and have had very little success. My platelet levels went up quickly, and then dropped as I became used to the drug after 12 months. Before the doctorweeneded me off the drug, I was taking 140mgs a day. I have gone from 84kgs to 105kgs.

In 1999 I had my spleen removed, and my platelets have been in the region of 130-245 ever since. I am now happily off Prednisonesone, and don't have my full-on mood swings, but I have not lost any weight.

I have tried going to the gym and many other things, but I can't shift my weight. It's something I'm not proud of, but at finally I am starting to accept it. I still have all my friends and family, I'm not in a life threatening situation anymore and I finally married my girlfriend of 7 years.

If people can only judge you by the outside, then they really aren't the sort of people that you want as friends.

Good Luck to everybody with their own struggles.

» ping397 - Re: ITP and Prednisone

In response to message posted by GameboyAdvance:

I was also diagnosed w/ITP in '98 or '99 (my count was at 3k at the time). The prednisone helped at first, my count stayed up for a while after I came off it. I was taking 60mg/day to start, so not nearly as much as you.

My count is now usually around 50-60k. I also gained about 40lbs in the past 2 yrs but my hematologist never said anything about it being caused by the prednisone. I was also eating terribly but my regular doctor seems to think it's mainly from the prednisone. I saw him today about something else and we ended up also talking about my weight and he gave me a prescription for weight loss pills.

Anyways, I just wanted to say hello and share my story. I had no prednisone might have anything to do w/my weight gain.
take care,everyone

In response to message posted by ping397:

I have a love/hate relationship with Prednisone; even though I wasn't on it very long. MOod swings were the culprit that ultimately led to discontinuing it but weight gain was on top there also. 10 pounds in about three weeks and this is from a weight watchers success story. I know how to eat right and still gained. I had to catch the flu just to lose the 10 pounds!

» jackie97 - prednisone

My name is Jackie,I am new to this site. I have been on prednisone on and off for 30 yrs. Due to asthma. I also have sinus polyups. Got the asthma under control with advair. But have to stay on a small dose for the sinus. I just found out I have osteoporosis so I stop taking the 5mg a day. I was off of it for about a month but got to where I hurt so bad I had to start back. My hands would not open or close when I first got up in the morning. After the first dose I felt great. It is so sad that something that helps so much can be so bad for us. So I am wondering now is this withdrawals or something else the pred. is just covering up. Please let me know if any of you have had this problem. Will the aches and pains eventually go away? I am going to try to skip a day and see how that works.
