» scottishgirl - Hi Lapine,
While rashes can be part of having lupus, "hives" aren't normally associated with them. This doesn't mean that the two aren't related, though! :-) Some people break out in hives when they're stressed, and a lupus flare can be extremely stressing!A lupus rash can be red, raised and disc-shaped. On the face, it can appear above and below the eyes and across the nose in the classic "butterfly" pattern. It usually heals from the inside out, creating a paler/lighter patch inside a ring of inflamed skin. These rashes can appear anywhere on the body, and are frequently seen on areas of skin that are exposed to sunlight or fluorescent lighting.
Your best bet is to have the hives checked by a dermatologist. If you already have lupus, the dermie should be able to determine if they are caused by the lupus, or by something else. If you don't know if you have lupus, the dermatologist may be able to diagnose you if a biopsy shows that the rash is lupus in origin.
I hope that this helps, and please let us know how it goes for you!
Take Care of You!
