My doctor just did amylase testing. Is this routine?

In response to message posted by nannywan:

As far as I'm aware, this is not one of the routine tests for PBC. Amylase testing is usually done when someone has severe abdominal pain caused by say Pancreatitis.

Amylase is a digestion enzyme made mainly by the pancreas and it breaks down the starches in food. Ulcers can also cause a rise in Amylase readings.

Now whether the end result could be a side effect of PBC, I'm not sure until I know what it is smile

If you are taking Imuran, then amylase and lipase testing should be done periodically. Imuran can raise these pancreatic enzyme levels.

My latest lab work shows these levels are elevated, so my hep lowered the dose of Imuran. I take Imuran for Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH).

Low levels of Amylase can be caused by Chronic pancreatitis, Cirrhosis, Hepatitis, Pancreatic cancer, Toxemia* of pregnancy.

High Levels of Amylase can be caused by Acute pancreatitis, Acute salivary-gland disease, Obstruction of ampulla of Vater, Obstruction of common bile duct, Pancreatic cancer, Pancreatic injury from perforated peptic ulcer
