» cmborris - Gawning Animals

Hi Stephen,

I have rabbits in my backyard - pets - and they love to gnaw on the irrigation system. Such is life. We just keep replacing the geysers as they erupt. And wire wrap the bushes.

But I'm a little confused. My *rodents* don't go after birds. However, they love the birdseed. What is the connection to the bird feeder reference? More the field of dreams theory - build it and they will come?

Thanks!

Cynthia

» biogardener - Two reasons

First of all, rabbits are vegetarians, so there is no reason why they would go after birds. They do eat grains, so the birdseed is just fine for them. They also need something hard to gnaw on because their front teeth keep on growing all their lives and need to be whittled down by gnawing on something hard to keep them in check. Why don't you give them some wood to gnaw on? That is better for them than plastic.

Hi again,

I suppose I misunderstood your reference to the bird feeder. My rabbits do not eat birds nor do they chase them! I have happy, normal buns that love birdseed and to gnaw. I'll buy them some wood. Might save a few of my plants.

Thanks!

Cynthia

Bird feeder reference relates to available food. Where there is a supply of food there will be animals and usually a lot more than you want or at least the animals you don't want. I would modify your feeder so food doesn't reach the ground for the rabbits. You don't want a population explosion. visit http://www.wildlifedamagecontrol.com/fee... Also rabbits are not rodents. They are lagomorphs. But they do gnaw as you say. I would love some photos of the damage. E-mail me at admin@wildlifedamagecontrol.com
