Coon sabi de, wannee? I lived there for a year. In the northeast among the Lao. It was a sight to see. Visited Bangkok and saw the city life, the old palace and the zoo. Went to a farm near Sakorn Nakorn to spend New Year's 74-75. Sawadee Be Mi!

Sawasdee kop,

The people are much different and there are no large cities. The "true" Thais are in the south where you see round eyes and features unlike the rest of oriental society. All the models in the magazines are probably "pure" Thai from the south central region. There is a place to the north everyone should visit. It is known for it's flowers and beautiful women. It is more due north from Bangkok than Nahkon Phanom. Cheng Mai is the place to go.

The people in the northeast mix Lao in their speech and are more closely related to them than the Thai. Some of them will tell you they are Lao. Sahkorn Nahkorn was a hotbed for communist sympathy and dissent in the sixties and early seventies. The local economies were based on trade with American military bases and the people had much higher incomes than the rest of the rural agrarian areas. It is very lush and the sky is very "big" and clear. The Mekong River runs along the border all the way through Cambodia (or whatever they call it now) and Vietnam.

The Lao's count the same way the Thai's do with the exception of the number twenty. They say sowseep instead of yeeseep. That might help you in your travels if you ever get up that way.
