» macgregor - Piracy Today

While technology has usurped the term "piracy" to describe various nefarious crimes, maritime piracy still exists today. In fact, in some parts of the world it thrives. And as we use modern technology so do the pirates. If you'd like to know more about this aspect of piracy, I did a 5-part series from August-December 2000 on this topic. The first article is at Modern Piracy.

As for people's fascination, it stems from the romanticized version of piracy that literature and film has brought us. Also, pirates symbolize freedom and the ability to escape from the hum drum monotony of our daily routines.
