Most ferrets do not like to expell when it is dirty in the litter box. One thing I have done is to block off corners with a piece of screen or wood ( something sturdy ) . When you let them run around, supervise them closly for about 40 minutes and when you see them back into a corner try to get them to a litter box. You might have to have more then one litter box in certain corners where you think they are likely to expell.
Also check the type of litter that you use as it may irritate there bottems. I have had the same problem with 3 ferrets and I am starting to have success.

I have a 1 year old male ferret and I can't get him to use his litter pan consistantly. Even if the pan is not dirty he will poo all over his cage including under his water bottle. His pan is a large sized ferret litter pan and he only uses it sometimes. Please help,I have tried everything.

I have a 7 month old female ferret who had a similar problem. With persistance I finally conquered the problem. My advice is: Clean your ferret's cage really well so that your ferret can't smell where it's already pottied, then make it clear to your ferret that the floor is not the potty...the litterbox is. This can be done by putting the scent of food on the floor or your ferret's favorite toys, course your ferret will hide these. Keep the cage floor clean and the litterbox dirty. All and all I believe your ferret's litterbox is too clean for your ferret to remember that its the potty. I clean the litterbox every four days or so and I never actually clean the litterbox so it always has a very slight scent, but on a better note my ferret with free roam of the house always uses her one litterbox. Another issue is timing. I play with my little one but herd her back toward the litterbox every few hours, like a potty break for little kids. Remember that your ferret has the mind of a child and should be watched as such.
