» Mugwump53 - God Save the Queen

Thank you, David, for this warm and touching article about the Queen Mum. I have always wondered how Canadians felt about "their" queen, and the way you speak of her, I have a better feeling for the situation.

I only discovered this site as a result of Tina's highlight in her team report. I will have to thank her for that. I look forward to catching up on your back articles.

Again, thanks for giving us a feeling for the person, which is sometimes lacking in news coverage.

Thank you for posting,
The royal family, although less significant in Canadian politics these days, but its role has been reaffirmed in the Constitution of 1982 and I doubt the monarchy in Canada would disapear any time soon (like we haven't had enough Constitutional problems, eh?). I believe the Monarchy, one of the wings of Parliament is essential in keeping the balance of power between the Federal government and the provincial government. Sometimes unelected officials DO improve democracy, as long as the constitution defines and restricts their power. The Queen Mother was Queen of this country for some time and she will be remembered in Canada for her 11 visits and her patronage of many Canadian military units.
The 9 days of mourning, were observed in Canada, and in front of my school, the Canadian and Franco-Ontarian flags flew at half mast as did those of thousands of schools and other buildings from Parliament buildings to Maple Leaf Gardens. The Monarchy is alive and well in Canada.
