» Wolvie27 - Liberals like to make promises...

...but not necissarily keep them. And some of the ones they keep, are the ones I wish they hadn't kept. Two examples I can think of right now of this is the GST and the Helicopter deal that the Liberals campaigned against in the 1993 election where they creamed the Conservatives.

Besides honesty, as a voter from the west I'm also looking to have Canada rid of what looks like a wasteful Senate because they aren't elected. Then there is the huge ass debt we have. Then our military is an national joke. Next gripe I have is that my provincial government despite saying they are for social programs (NDP), have let our health descend to a point where my sister gets pushed out a hospital door right after she's had surgery on her hand, and that is partly the Liberals fault for making all those spending cuts in the 1990s.

Other gripes I've had with the Liberals is the waste that the Auditor general's report cited. Next, they sort of copy the opposition's proposed tax cuts and call an election on the 'possible' reason that the opposition dared them to do it. Who is running this government? The Liberals or the Alliance? So, it gets me to thinking that Jean Chretien is only about the power being the PM, what little there is.

Then there is this matter of Liberals saying Alliance will destroy health care and cut social programs like they get their jollies from it. Who are they kidding? If ANY government ever did that, Canadians would storm parliament and for the first time threaten their government with more than pies, chocolate milk, and standing in the cold streets being beaten down by police, so why would the Alliance ever even think that?

And lastly but not leastly, I have more than just anger fueling my vote. I want to have a government that has a plan for current ideas. NDP in many provinces have shown their plans don't work. Conservatives have the plans of the Aliance (Conservative and Reform Aliance, right?). Liberals have shown they'll try carbon copies of the Alliance stuff. That leaves the Alliance with an original plan? Nope, their plan is taken from places like the Reagan administration in the states a few years back, Alberta and Atlantic provincial style government. But on ideas, none of the parties present new ideas, just new packaging.

Finally, I want to know what the parties want to do with the future of new ideas. Computers, non-oil driven vehicles, space exploration, internet, enviromental protection, genetic research, bio-engineered technologies, etc.

This is the first election in Canada I'm going to be able to vote in, so I wonder, does my rant relate to your article?

Thanks Michael for posting. I see you have strong beliefs in politics, its good to be involved. I'm not a Liberal and i'm more of a socio-democrat (although the NDP's problem is they try to incorporate right-wingish issues such as tax cuts instead of staying to the left where they should be) or Green Party. So we're both against the Liberals. Although I don't agree with the Canadian Alliance, i respect your opinion and hope you come read next weeks article when, I do write about the Alliance (I will stay as unbiased as possible).

In a what could be a very typical young guy response is "Cool." I really love the Life In Canada forum here, and can't wait to read your article. What I would love to see in it is a sorta pro/con setup, where you say all the ways they 'rule' and then all the ways they 'bite'. I felt you almost accomplished that with your article on the Liberals. Then again, trying to write down all the issues important to Canadians like you and I is a bit time consuming. So I wish ya the best of luck with your article, since reporting on politics can be a real dirty job at times. Hmm, make that most of the time.

Also, could you write up a note like mine only from the 'left' political point of view, since I think mine was 'right' tilted just slightly. Hehe... Though, I would think we can both agree that politicians and beauracrats need to change their ways and healthcare is really important. Places we might disagree would be debt reduction and improving the military's situation. Where else might we disagree and agree? Things to think about...

In response to message posted by Wolvie27:

The problem with the Rule/Bite thing is that these are all election promises which may not be kept and the only party we've seen in action is the Liberal Party (and Pre Liberal Rule Tories) so we can't be sure about the New Deomcrats or the Alliance. If we listen to what other people say about the party could be false too as if politicians lie, they tend to lie about each other as well.

As for the Left sided, it tends to be seeing the Liberals as 'bad' as the CA and the Tories. We obviously agree the Liberals have cut on healthcare transfers to the provinces although when he did cut a deal, it was to make the rich provinces happy (Alberta, Ontario and Quebec). The Liberals LET Health care be privatized by not imposing penalties on provinces who violate principles of Medicare. Also, under the Liberals the Rich-poor gap has widened and the Liberals' seem a little hipocrytical in critizing the Alliance for threatening to do the same. The Liberals aren't the Centre-Left but more of Right-Centre and have shown their pro-corporation by signing NAFTA while saying it would renegotiate it or supporting the WTO. Medication and post-secondary tuition fees are more expensive and the Liberals have no plan for helping the environment. And of course the NDP is also calling the Liberals arrogant for ignoring parliament, calling an early election and of course for saying that they are an opposition to the CA and the Tories.

So yeah, thats the leftish side. Of course the left doesn't treat the CA or the Tories any better.
