In response to message posted by qb:
As an older graduate--48, my frustration in finding a full-time position as a college librarian is all of the younger, well qualified librarians. My competition has a minimum of two masters and/or a doctorate degree, web authoring, systems management, bilingual, and classroom experience.

I didn't make a mistake becoming a librarian, my mistake was getting the degree so late.

» sagreen3 - Career options in Library Science

I have a Masters Degree in Library Sciences and have worked in the public library. I currently work as a school librarian in a middle school in Texas where I enjoy working with technology and curriculum planning. I have small children who are in school so working in a school environment has been beneficial. However, I have started to feel like I want to explore my options and see what else is out there that would fit my skills and experience. I have had thoughts of possibly going back to school to get a Doctorate degree because I find that I enjoy helping other librarians and I feel that there is a big need in recruiting librarians in the school and public libraries. I know that in the next few years in my district, a large number of librarians will be eligible for retirement, yet I don't know that there are that many replacement librarians coming in new.

Does anyone have suggestions on what options might be out there for librarians with education backgrounds? Thanks,

» wonderbar - Getting a Library Science Degree

I have a question on Library Science. I have a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and a minor in Information Systems. I currently am a computer technician. I love books and I like to do research and was wondering about getting a degree in Library Science. My question is am I stupid for wanting to do this. I'm not sure how much education I would have to get, plus I live in SD and there are no schools that offer the degree. The ones I've seen online are expensive. Any suggestions on what I should do? I thought with the computer background I have this would be a good opportunity for me.

Hop on board the shit--the librarianship! It's a great career if you enjoy mediating information for people. Your job will be to locate information and synthesize it for others. You will provide information that will help people make important decision in your life. I am a public librarian in NYC. I enjoy the work but the people are crazy! Watch out for old, pissed off librarians who can't get a job anywhere else and will make your life hell. And, there is always competition from computer-savvy younger librarians. In all, however, you will be in an information universe filled with the greatest ideas of humankind to tantalize your brain and imagination. I wouldn't want to work anywhere else.

» Franny19 - Library Science...how do I know if it's for me?

Hey everybody!

So I'm 19 years old and trying to make the hardest decision of my life: what I want to do for the rest of it. As I try and sit back and think of all the things that I could possibly want to do, library science is something that does come to mind...but how do I know if it's really for me or not? And would it be something that would get me by if I had to support myself?

I've looked everywhere for information on this but now I think it's time for some real advice from some real librarians. Any advice would be so wonderful, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks!! ~Franny

» Timothy2 - Careers in Library Science

I'm 40 and have been out of college for several years. I have never been able to figure out what I've wanted for my life's work. However, at the suggestion of a relative, I have decided that the closest idea lies in the realm of Library Science. I love to archive my personal music collection on my personal computer and transfer to CD. I also have a passion for historical music facts that I annotate on each CD's liner notes. I have decided to apply at several local libraries for part-time work to decide if the library culture is ideal for me. I have absolutely no experience working in a library. With that in mind, I have no idea what an entry-level library position would be. So simply, for what position could I apply? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
