I think you're right - most people don't have any idea what librarians really do. Most think that we stamp books and read all day. Oh and of course there's the "shhh"ing as you mentioned ;- ) And if you ever tell someone that a librarian actually needs a Master's degree they usually can't believe it!

In actuality most of my day is spent evaluating and selecting materials for the library's collections, de-selecting materials to make room for the new (that part can be especially difficult), providing reference service to the public, bibliographic and Internet instruction, readers' advisory, working on various research projects and whatever else happens to come along. Wish I had more time for reading.

That's partly why I wanted to be the editor for this topic, to let people know what it is librarians really do and hopefully contribute something (however small) to changing the image a little.

Thanks again for your comments. I haven't had a chance to yet but I'm looking forward to checking out your site. Gillian
