The Image of the Librarian: What's in a Name?: InterestingRead the article this discussion is about

» Carol Wallace - Interesting Names end up being so much more important than we ever imagine. Quite honestly I would have been glad to go by the title of classroomologist when I taught, because that was how I defined my job - one who imparts knowledge in a classroom setting. I was a TEACHER, and not a politician or any other of the roles that the higher-ups seemed to think went with the job.But we teachers have other titles that can be used - I am a professor, and academic . . . are there any other terms to describe a librarian that are as easily understood as the alternate ways to name a teacher? But I think the situation for you is even worse than you have stated. You also have to fight that stereotype. The little old lady with wire-rimmed spectacles frowning and constantly putting a finger to her lips and saying "Shhh!" I'll bet if you ask most people what a librarian is they will say it's someone who keeps the library quiet and knows how to put books on the shelf in the right order. The fact that you have the background and training to unearth undreamed of sources of knowledge escapes most people. Too bad you couldn't get some kind of media image-changing campaign like the one for milk. ;-) By the way - welcome to Suite101! I enjoyed your article. -- posted by Carol Wallace
