» pentimento - Marriage .... and who we are wed to Your article made me think back on a documentary that my partner and I just watched about Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. One thing about the documentary that really hit me was the information that while our country was still expousing slavery, and later while our country was still denying women even a modicum of civil rights, a number of european countries and canada had already disposed of such draconian practices. Our country that presents itself as the radical liberal ideal (at least in terms of democracy) has always, or at least long been, a hypocrite. And now, once again, europe and canada are recognizing same sex parternships/unions/marriages and our country is in a frenzy. And, I have to admit, it pisses me off!!!!! OK I'm done venting. I've thought about this. It seems to be, somehow, connected to the idea that women have more of a need for self discovery in a world that has cubby holed them than men who have more often been encouraged to pursue self the process of getting to know who they are. But, I'm not a woman--only one who admires them. -- posted by Phil_J
