I can so relate to what you mean about financial planning. I have to juggle my checkbook on my computer because I can't bear to deal with the reality of how little money I actually have and have a really hard time making myself stay awake and present when other people offer sound financial advice. And yet WE have to. It's not optional. You really brought that home with the example about your friend.

I hear you! There's a million things I'd rather be doing than balancing my checkbook. One of them is having a root canal without anesthetic. Yet you're right when you say it has to be done. Grrrrr...
