Another excellent article, Beth. It shows the unbiased detachment that our children studying history would do well to follow.

A few years back, I went round the Bosworth Field Vistors' Centre. There seemed to be little there to indicate that the location of the battle may have been somewhere else (i.e. not at the location of the Visitors' Centre !). Do you think that there may have been some "selection" in the presentation of evidence going on here ?! (grin).

For those interested, there are some more photos and notes about the battlefield on my web site - select the Historical Tour:

Look forward to the next article.

» thebattwoman - Thanks Mike

It's funny how history can get twisted and how people tend to argue over the details.
I expect a lot of it is about one thing, tourism! It's another attraction for the town, and I can't blame them. How many towns in the world have had two kings fighting there?

Richard III is certainly a well known character, especially thanks to Shakespeare whose view of him may have been rather distorted, and we all know how a lot of people tend to believe what they read??

Myabe the battle itself stretched out further than we thought, but essentially, for the purpose of true historical reporting, we need to acknowledge the facts, and if the evidence is there...? It's only fair to the children of Leicestershire to know all and then assume themselves. Afterall, we'd all be boring if we agreed with each other.

Does anyone else have an opinion? It would be good to hear it, and thanks for your input Mike!

» Leicesterman - Battle of Bosworth

I was very interested to read the articles and discussion on the ‘Battle of Bosworth’, especially the view that it may not have actually taken place where Leicestershire County Council tells us it did.

In most medieval battles (of which arguably Bosworth was the last) many of the casualties occurred during the final rout. When Richard’s supporters realised that all was lost they must have high tailed it, hotly pursued by Henry’s supporters, across the open fields in the direction of Dadlington where many would have lost their lives.

In one sense it is like the discussion on who wrote Shakespeare – surely it matters not who wrote those wonderful plays and sonnets – what does matter is that they exist. In the case of the Battle of Bosworth, it happened and England, for better or for worse, was never the same again.

» thebattwoman - Very true Max

Thanks for your input Max.
I agree with you, it matters not where it happened, just that it did. As you say, with England's colourful history, who knows where we would be today were certain aspects of it changed!

I believe with every historical event, points of view are always going to differ and without guaranteed eyewitness accounts we have to take them all into consideration.

Thankfully Max, we have people like you whom we can rely on to try and unearth the truth. At least the future generations can only benefit from the age of computers and from the details we record more throughly today.

I happen to believe that what you mentioned about Richard's army fleeing holds a substantial amount of truth and common sense. This would certainly explain it.
