It is many years since I visited this park - it was enjoyable then but it looks as though I shall have to wend my way back up for another look.

As Elizabeth said, it is very interesting having a miner tell you what went on. I have been down a mine at Chaterly Whitfield, near Nottingham, and it was fascinating. When they started up some of the old machinery the noise was horiffic - to have to work in conditions like that could not have been nice, although I suppose it would be like many jobs, you get used to it even though you may not like it.

I remember going down a mine on a school trip as a child. I wish I could remember where it was!
I do know however that it was kind of scary going so deep underground with nothing but a helmet and a light!

The musty dusty smell was bad enough and even if you didn't suffer from claustrophobia, being so cramped with nothing but black surfaces surrounding you was enough to cause more than a few twinges!

It was an experience I'll always remember, but I'm not sure whether I'd care to repeat it. As for working down there constantly, the thought makes me shudder!!

I also recall completing a history project at school about the mines. Not only did I feel awful about the conditions men worked under, I felt so sorry for the pit ponies that were used. I remember they became blind because of the continuous darkness around them.
