» Satirie - Tina, Jerri and Mary...

THANK YOU so much! I learned as well from putting this article together. It should've been divided into two parts but it grew before I realized it. I'm sure there were some things left out, so there might be a shorter "part 2".

Anyway, thank you, Tina, Jerri and Mary!!! :-)

In response to Fun posted by Tina_Coruth:

the Hawaiian alphabet only has twelve letters

Although it says 8 consonants and 5 vowels, it includes that: The 'okina ('), diacritical mark or glottal stop is considered a consonant (eg. ho'olaule'a). The letters are: h-k-l-m-n-p-w and a-e-i-o-u. Here's one link to it, Jerri:

» biogardener - Alphabets of the World Link

I checked out your "Alphabets of the World" link at the bottom of the page. Only looked at the two links for German. Unfortunately, the information on it is outdated by 50 years. What the writer calls the "German Alphabet" is, in fact, the historic Gothic script which is now only used by caligraphers the same in German as in English and any other western language. No one in Europe uses that script to write any more, and few people know how to read it. I learned to read and write it not in school but on my own out of interest.

I hope that the information on the other alphabets is more accurate. As you know, anyone can publish anything on the Internet without having to show its accuracy. Here is another example of it.

It is wonderful that there are so many different ways to communicate among people of the world. To me, I think braille would be the most difficult to learn. I had a lot of trouble learning ASL. My fingers did not want to cooperate! I enjoyed this very much Genia. Will visit the links in a bit.

Thanks for finding that, Traute! I had an option of putting a number of individual links to various alphabets, and kept searching, then when I found that site, I thought I had found a gem. I'm replacing the link temporarily until I can check out the other ones in it. Thanks again. :-)

It would be. I think it takes a lot more concentration.

Thanks, V. :-)

» biogardener - Still Interesting

There were a lot of good things on that linked site, Genia, and I am sorry to see the link go completely. Maybe you could mention it with the proviso that the information on the site is not reliably researched, but that it does show several interesting alphabets.

I have a couple of articles which are related to yours:

This is my all-time most popular article, and it shows stylized lettering of the Jugendstil period from just over 100 years ago.

In this article on HTML code, I talk about letters of different languages as code for sounds.

Thanks, Hilary! :-) It's a very good site. I'm impressed with the number of really good sites there are for "fun learning". Now to find the time to add them on the links page.
