I did the exact same thing last week
I was boiling water in a pot for tea and forgot about it. Later I smelled something burning. I walked the whole house looking for the source of the smell. I even looked outside (our neighbor likes to burn trash). I checked all electric outlets and nothing. Then, my smoke alarm went off... I took it down and kept looking and decided to check the stove. Needless to say, the pot was empty and the pan was smoking LOL However, I am a pretty decent cook, when I don't get sidetracked!
