Do you have any tips for transferring a simple drawing to a knitting pattern? I have a buffalo I got from a coloring book that I want to put on the front of an infant sweater for my sister's new baby, but haven't the foggiest idea where to start!!

Thanks,
Sheridan

there are sites-- i don't have one bookmarked so you'll have to look it up--(i think its about.com.knitting) that have knitters graph paper.

most knit stitches are not perfect squares, but tend to be 3 X 4 (so a gauge of 4 inches might be 12stitches arcoss (3x4) and and 16 rows.. (4x4)
so an image graphed on standard paper would be stretched out an elongated.

you can down load the knitters graph paper for free.. there are several scales.. find the scale that is closest to you gauge (i presume you sort of know what weight yarn you want!)--since the 3 X 4 example is generaly true.. but not exclusively true! the graph paper comes in several different scales.

now you have a few choices...
1- print the graph paper onto an acetate--like for an overhead projector.. and place it over the image.. get an idea of how big the knit image will be..(or print it on light weight paper, and hold it up to light to 'see through the graph paper')

then shrink or enlarge the image (most copiers will do that) (OR use larger or smaller graph paper squares!)to about the right size.

when you have it about right..
take a printed copy of the graph paper, load it into paper tray of copier, and copy image onto graph paper..(make a few copies!)

you'll have to clean up the edges.. since the rounded image won't perfectly line up with graph paper. this is why you want extra copies--you might not get it perfectly first time round.. but eventually.. you have a graphed image.

now take colored pencils, and color in the graph paper.
if its perfect go a head and knit it, if its just slightly off, find a copier that increases or decreases in 1% increments.. and get it right.

finally, you're ready to knit! if your design is a small motif, you might want to do it as a fair isle repeat, but most likely, you'll be doing an intarsia design.

now all you need to do is knit.

its all rather easy now (presuming you have access to a copier!) If you have never done intarsia.. well thats another short essay!

Might i suggest the 5 hour baby sweater too? there is a fairly common 'variation' of the sweater that zips up the back (instead of buttoning up the front) its very easy to put on and take off, and it give you a nice big center front area for you buffulo design.

the sweater (it comes with a hood or hoodless) is very simple-- its knit from the top down, with a simple raglan shaped sleeve.
and about.com.knitting has the hooded back zipped version available in its collection of links to free patterns. the simple design lends its self to 'dressing up' with intarsia.

» SheridanKH - WOW!!

In response to message posted by adelletilton:

Wow, thanks!! I've got the graph paper printed off and my design transferred over to it. I need to go through and fill in the squares to see how it's going to look. And I got the back knitted up so I've got my gauge to go by as well.

This is going to be fun!!

Thanks so much smile
