So which butterflies have you seen in your garden this year? So far we've had Monarchs, some white ones, painted ladies, but that's all I remember seeing so far. We usually see a black swallowtail around, but I haven't seen one yet this year. What have you seen?

I love butterflies and have lots of them in my garden, but don't ask me what their names are. I am as good with butterfly names as you are with weed names. So now we are even.

You might be interested to know which plants repel butterflies. They are the plants which you need where cabbage family plants are to thrive. You don't want your cabbage visited by the cabbage butterfly. It will lay its eggs on the plants and the worms which emerge make a pretty big mess of the cabbage. To keep the butterflies away, you plant -- in order of potency -- wormwood, tansy, chamomile, in other words, the strong-smelling bitter herbs.

These herbs work wonders in the vegetable garden, but keep them out of the butterfly garden.

I've seen Monarchs, Viceroys, painted ladies, cabbage whites, and both the tiger and black swallowtails, sulphurs, plus a lot of smaller ones I can't name. One is really fascinating because in flight you would swear it is blue, but when it settles it's clearly grey and red. <img src="http://www.suite101.com/userfiles/79/rhubarb.gif" alt="rheum" align=left>

Thanks Traute! I have stopped trying to grow broccoli because the first 2 years I tried, the little green worms got them. Stripped the plants bare. If I get brave again, I'll try growing those herbs next to them. Does your Chamomile winter over, does it self seed, or do you grow it as an annual?

Isn't it fun having butterflies around? I've had fun watching the Monarchs chase each other away from the butterfly weed. They also seem to try bullying (is that a word?) the birds away from the coneflowers. Thanks for the responses. Anyone else have butterflies?
