Hi Linda,I've been gardening with my granddaughter since she was 18 months old. Now, she is 5 and has her own little garden much like your son's. I plan time just for gardening and she follows my lead with the watering and weeding. She gets so excited when the first blooms appear and I reminder that all her tender care brought the blossoms to reach high and show their colors. We have a enjoy the wonders of gardening and each season we learn more about the plants and living things. Great article!

In response to message posted by MyGrammie:I had my son gardening with me froma young age, too, and he loves it! I saw Dr. Mike Riera on CBS Early Show this past Saturday morning. He talked about how planting a garden, nurturing and watering it, were great ways for a child to learn to wait for something, instead of the instant-gratification most desire! I thought that made a lot of sense. Plus, it is much healthier than being indoors in front of a tv!

I am sure with time she'll learn to leave the blossoms, but I treasure her excitement in picking them too and the little kisses I get as well! :-)

In response to message posted by Juju57:It sure is healthier than the TV! And I think it also teaches a healthy respect for living things. When I taught in an inner city school, there were so many kids who did not respect anything living (plant, person, animal). I wish that more kids were given opportunities to be gardeners! I think there would be a lot less tragedies. I always did a "farm" unit with my Early Childhood Sp Ed kids where we would plant a flat of something fast growing and the kids always loved it.
