Someone here must live in Canada. The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Guelph Storms are Canadian teams.

Thanks for all the tips about the ice skating rinks. Since we had snow in southern Ontario today, it will soon be time to put on the skates.

Be sure to sent the kids over to
Kids Korner
for lots of holiday fun. They will enjoy all the activities, contests and links. There are lots of topics for them to visit for learning fun. Have them check it out. They will be delighted with the Christmas activities that will be coming up soon.

Thanks again for all the tips.

» blankola - tarp and rink boards

My question is how do you avoid any tearing of your tarp (by skate blades..especially figure skates)at the boards ( which are 2 x 8's ) were the tarp goes up and over.
I've put some protection on the tops of the boards but its the facing of them that is getting the little nicks and tears from the kids skates.
Any advice for this year and future ones would be appreciated.

» KCDDad - How do I fix "shaling"

I have been adding water to the rink area to address some bumps but it seems I am doing more harm than good. The ice looks perfect but once you step on it is breaks like your walking om crackers. Do I chip out all on this thin ice or simply poke holes so the water reaches into these pockets.

How do I continue adding more water but prevent shaling?

Thanks

It seems that RinkRake hasn't visited in a while. I can't answer your questions, but am hoping that someone else can.

Like Mary, I hope someone can kick in and answer some questions. I have never made a rink before, so I haven't a clue. We used to skate at a neighborhood pond when I was a kid and nature did it for us. Perhaps your ice isn't thick enough and the weather isn't cold enough if it is cracking.

Anybody?

» phila91 - Backyard rink in NewJersey

This message goes out to anyone and everyone.
I am building a backyard ice rink, but it is located in New Jersey. After reading some of the Q & A's, most of these posts & replies were way north and colder than where I am located. Therefore, my question is this:
What materials and procedure would best be suited for constructing and maintaining a backyard ice rink (weather permitting), given my location and climate?

well i am only a kid but i can give you an answer. first off is the thin ice all over your rink? if it is then you should not break all of it up if it only in some spots like the corners or the middle you break it up with a shovel and be careful not to rip your liner. after you are done break some up you should not put water in those spots. (me and my dad learned that the hard way). you throw some snow in there and until it gets cold for a day then over the snow yoshoulddl put some water be sure the snow is about even with the other ice!!!!!

well what part of jersey do you live in the middle north or south. well i useed to live in northeern jersey but i had moved up to NY warwick Ny there is only about a 5 degree differecne for where i moved from.but in jersey you have to get the tapr down before it snows or else you are screwed. well i suggest that you put a thin coating of water first because i know that in jersey it doesnt get as cold just put the ice on layer by layer so that it will number one evenly freeze and if you only have one night of the week that is cold it will freeze that nightt as long as the temputer doesnt get into the 50's your rink wont completeply melt so layer by layer is what i would sugest
