What's happening in my body after a nephrectomy?
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 Next » » banker012 - Re: Re: Re: Post Surgery In response to message posted by Lexy047:Lexy,,,in answer to your inquire about what are they doing to lower my potassium and creatinine... they have started giving me this yucky powder (it's not that bad - tastes like chalk) I started taking it 1x per week, then, 2x's, then 3x's, and now I'm up to 4x's per week - this isn't bad since I'm told the average dose is 4x's per day. The powder is called "Kionex"but I think that is a generic name for it. It has generally lowered my potassium count to 5.6 to 5.7 range from 6.4 and higher... (normal is 3.55 to 5.5). For the creatinine, they had me speak to the Head Dietitian at my local Hospital. She in turn got together with me and worked out a daily limit on food groups I can have. So, far this management plan through intake of food has not eliminated my high creatinine, but it certainly has kept it in check. I'm kind of a big guy - 6'1" and 285lbs. I carry my weight very well, but I still need to watch what I eat. The dietician has limited me to 2000 milligrams potassium, 60 grams of protein, 25-30 grams fiber(constipation from all the blood pressure medicine I take) and 2500 total calories The food groups are restricted to 8 starches, 5meats, 2 veg, 3 fruit,1 milk, and fats as needed. The potassium and protein (protein is where creatinine is from) along with about 35 other types of nutrients can be found in a great soft back copy almanac (4th edition) called "NUTRITION ALMANAC" by Kirschmann. It's a great reference book - in fact I went through it and listed every food I could have that was low (or lower) in protein and potassim - it took a whole day, but was worth it for the easy time it made of meal planning. There is a wealth of information in this book. I ordered mine from the internet - But Barnes and Noble or any bookstore should have it. There are also a lot of books out there on cooking for us kidney patients on or "not yet" on dialysis. I have found not that many doctors out there that can help,,, there are some,,, but they are not as plentiful as say a heart doctor ,,,but there is a lot of information - good information - on the internet,,,just keep looking, and make sure you have a good renal doctor....that's most important. My doctor found my cancer by accident trying to figure out how come my blood pressure was so high. Anyway, if I can answer any questions please e-mail me direct if you wish at banker012@webtv.net. I don't have all the answers, but I will be glad to share what I know and the many, many things that have happened and are still happening to me...Mike -- posted by banker012 » countrybumpkin - Having both kidneys removed Has anyone had both of their kidneys removed? I am trying to find out what life is like after having both kidneys removed. I'm scheduled to have this surgery in July and would like to hear all info about this. Please respond with any info you may have. Thank you-- posted by countrybumpkin » LITTLELULU49 - Re: Having both kidneys removed In response to message posted by countrybumpkin:I had both kidney's removed in November. So far things are going OK. I have trouble with diarrhea once in awhile and you really have to watch your fluid intake. I drink between 4-5 cups of fluid a day. I feel about the same as I did when the kidney's were there but with the dialysis I have more energy than I did before. I am walking about 2 miles every day whereas before I couldn't get around the block. Hope this helps. I know someone who's ureter is blocked and one of the options this person was given was to just let the kidney die inside the body and live with the other kidney which is healthy. Other options included surgery which is very risky as this person has just finished battling cancer (for the 2nd time) less than 2 months ago. The person I am speaking of has been in very immense pain for the last couple weeks. I would just like to talk with someone else who knows something about this. We could use some support.-- posted by NEBRASKA_CUPCAKE » rstighe - Does anyone have this problem? My Dad had a kidney transplant about 7 years ago, and I was wondering if anyone out there has had the Ureter (the tube from the new Kidney to the bladder) to die or I guess you could say it has grown up. The Doctor's say there is no method of fixing it that they can do,,,, Does anyone have any information of solutions that they have had done with a problem like this? And my Mom wants to know, does all kidney transplant patients have sexual impotence problem's?-- posted by rstighe » ecla - Questions about Nephrectomy Hi! My Mom has a lump that's blocking the path of the urine coming from her right kidney to her bladder. These lead to the abnormal shrinking of her right kidney. First they punctured some holes on my mom's right side. And they tried to insert a tube through the hol ean dinto my mom's right kidney. However, they can't seem to insert it because they my mom's kidney is already small. So they removed the right kidney. The operation was successful and my mom is recuperating at home. However, after secrection, yellowish fluids are coming out of the holes. The doctor said that dialysis can removed this fluids. This might be caused by infection from her nephrectomy and my Mom's diabetes. So they gave us a higher dosage of antibiotic. Now the holes are closing and the secretion hasn't stop. Forgive my arrogance, but does anyone know how will these secretion get out of my mom's body when the holes completely closed...-- posted by ecla » tdax - Removing 1 kidney My ex wife is having one kidney removed. She was a Prey in 1954 and her kidney never developed correctly, now she has a cyst on it and has to have it removed. 15 years ago she was told that this kidney was only functioning at a 20% capacity, about 6 months ago she began to have reoccurring UTI's and Bladder infections, she had an MRI and CAT Scan done and that is when the cyst was discovered. The doctors were informed that she knew she had a bad kidney, but that there had never been a cyst on it. I told her she needed to push the doctors to do more in checking the kidney, however the doctors just kind of blew the cyst off saying her other kidney had devoted into some kind of "Super Kidney" and that she did not need to be worried about it. Now it has to be removed, can anyone tell us what to expect after the surgery, long term and short term situations. This has really become a situation. Thank You in advance. -- posted by tdax « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
